Read In One Day
Tina Turner is one of the greatest entertainers of our time. When one writes their story, it typically includes one's flaws. Yes, Tina had an abusive partner and finally made the decision to get out and never go back; she had a mother that didn't provide the love she craved; and was fortunate to have other musicians embrace her and find the love of her life. Between her great relationship, multiple houses, and redecorating, she found happiness. But what she doesn't tackle is that fact that her four children were left without either parent and shuffled around to other relatives and friends. If you are going to be honest about your "love story" then this aspect of your life should be faced as well. Still love Tina.

Before You Can Really Help Anyone, You Have To Strengthen Yourself
At one point, life became so bad for Tina Turner that she tried suicide, and when she woke up in a hospital bed and realized she was alive, she was devastated. Tina Turner was in such an abusive marriage with Ike Turner death was preferable. He beat her up so often that her nose was permanently displaced, her jaw broken and she had permanent black eyes. She went to the local ED’s but because of her color she was treated, released and the abuse never reported. And, then she escaped.Tina was born Anna Mae Bullock in Nuthouse, Tenn in 1939. She was an unloved child, her mother left her family, and this was to become part of her life. She never felt loved until her second marriage. Tina could always sing and dance as a child, and this led to her career. She went to an Ike Turner concert, and when he heard her sing she was offered a job. They had four children to bring up, she brought a son into this marriage, Ike brought two sons, and they had a son together. The abuse she suffered in this marriage is well documented, but the real story is when she escaped, left Ike and started her new life. The book is a reflection of Tina’s professional life and how she made the big time. She became successful with her talent, and her ability to make her own publicity. Her hit records, and her life as a professional singer and dancer is a highlight. Tina did it her way, and she brought up her children with love. The suicide of her son, Craig, this past summer was a devastating loss in a difficult year.Tina met the love of her life, Erwin Bach, and after 23 years together they married in a lavish ceremony in Switzerland, her new home. Marriage was wonderful, and then she became ill, a stroke, kidney failure, and kidney transplant. Tina’s story shows the resilience, stamina and courage of a woman who has overcome so many obstacles in her life. And the final tragedy of her son’s suicide. Tina has had quite a life, and she is a woman to admire. The lessons Tina has learned, “Before you can really help anyone, you have to strengthen yourself” is reflected throughout her life.Recommended. prisrob 10-16-18

A Great Memoir!
A great book with lots of photos, and such a personal story. I'm from Tennessee and have followed Tina and loved her music for so long. It was nice to catch up with her since her retirement by reading this memoir. It's amazing what she has gone through and overcome, even since her days with Ike.This book starts with her second marriage in 2013. It dwells a bit in the past and covers her days with Ike and on tour, eventually walking away from that and reinventing herself, and then retiring and finding love again. From there, we learn of her struggle with cancer, a stroke, and a kidney transplant! The book even ends with one last tragedy that just happened earlier this year!I really enjoyed the personal stories she shared, like about her friendship with David Bowie or her farewell tour or why she became a citizen of Switzerland. There's lots of little things like this sprinkled throughout the book that really make it an enjoyable read.Great read! Tina really is simply the best!

Take You Higher
It is 2:20 am. I bought the book and had no intentions of laying it down until I was done. I imagine that is how Tina felt about writing it. As one of the highest inspirations of my life, starting at a young age, Tina’s story has so very much more to it than the hopelessly low Ike Turner. Buy the book. Read it. You will be grateful you did!

she sure turns poison into medicine.
When my husband suggested that he was going to buy me this book I decided to buy myself the kindle copy as I didn't want to wait for the book to arrive. Initially I was a bit worried it would be a re-hash of what I already knew about her life (which has been very well documented) but I am very pleased to honestly say there is so much more in this book than what I already knew about her life. I absolutely love the book and am so pleased it is not all the same as "The Tina Turner Musical" or previous film about her life. This book is completely full of different material and some hard facts about her life that I never knew. She is one very brave and kind woman that has mellowed with age. There is much in my own life that crosses over and is very similar to hers. Weirdly years ago watching her film and her proclaiming to walk away from her marriage and only want the surname Turner from her marriage seemed odd. Little did I know that years later my surname would be Turner too :-) but for good reasons. Sadly the comparisons don't end there and like her I was in a domestically violent relationship when I was younger and that certainly sets your life path for the years to follow. Like Tina I to practice spirituality and love Buddhism which have been influential in my life. She has overcome some difficult hurdles, without giving away too much detail about the book some of the subjects that are covered in this book are the truths about her marriage to Ike and the extent of his ridiculously unkind treatment of her, even bringing her to a brothel on their wedding day. She nicely and sweetly compares the degrading behaviour she endured with him to the lovely, kind and compassionate true love she experiences on her wedding day with Erwin Bach. Her wedding to him sounded like something out of a fairytale. She pulled out all the stops and made sure it was perfect, it certainly sounded like it was.Her health struggles are touched on in the book and how she has used her personal strength to overcome great difficulties in her life, she is brave, courageous and a truly ladylike and beautiful soul. It shines through in the book just what a lovely down to earth person she is. She is certainly not a diva or a wild child that she may have been in her earlier years or as a child when she was fond of playing with snakes until she got into a sticky situation. Life has mellowed her and she is humble but also appreciates the luck life has eventually allowed her to have. The section in the book where she discusses her struggles academically as a child and also as an adult was very touching and I confess to having tissues handy during reading most of the book. How times have changed and there is no longer the stigma attached to being dyslexic.Apart from the fact she has so much talent for singing, she is a great songwriter too she has gone from Hell finally reach her Paradise. For anyone wondering if this is a book that has new and previously unheard of details about her life, YES 100% there is plenty and obviously it covers the parts we know already but it is an autobiography so it would need to include the truth, even when it is not pleasant. There is plenty of positivity in the book and lots of warm and touching private revelations that will warm your heart too.

what a woman
I really enjoyed this book, especially when she speaks about coming to terms with the many difficult events in her life. Her strength, optimism, faith and determination are inspiring. She is restrained and dignified in her account of circumstances that would have left many people understandably angry and bitter. Of course she had her tremendous talent to power her on but I think it was as much down to her spirit and energy that she found such great solo success.

A pleasure to have tina discuss her early life through to now
Only Tina can tell her story and she discusses her life with no restraint here. I cannot believe what she has dealt with over the last 5 years but she shows how strong she is by dealing with life and death illnesses and tells the story of getting to her "nirvana" with her new husband. It's a great read even if you have heard all the early life before Tina really discusses what she had to live through from birth to the current day.A living legend without a doubt

You can rise from the ashes if you're determined to.
I'm not a big Tina Turner fan and seemingly having lived under a rock, I knew very little about her life. I finished this book in 2 days and would say it's an uncomfortabley honest account of the struggles she endured as she recounts the harrowing details of her violent marriage to Ike, her unloving relationship with her mother and ensuing health issues that brought her close to death. This is the story of a determined, motivated musical legend who fought hard to achieve her ambitious dreams against all odds. And won. I would highly recommend.

If you think your life is hard, read this!
Someone once said to me that if every person put all their troubles in a bag and hung their bags out of the window, mine would be one of the smallest. Well, I don’t think there would be a bag big enough for Tina. A fine illustration of the benefit of a positive outlook and sheer human resilience. It left me feeling very humble. A fast read and with plenty of photos. When I finished I (again) went to YouTube and looked at some of her performances. What a delight.
