The scent is a pleasant, overpowering combination that falls somewhere between peppermint and fresh laundry, and dissipates in a couple days, so you need to keep reapplying it. I believe the goal is to convince the resident rodents that your neighbor's car is a better idea. You could probably save some money by getting a nice container (like this one) and mixing your own concoction, but it does seem to work.
