All Rights Reserved. Review: Fun and surprisingly clever, albeit without being groundbreaking - Groundhog Day meets Equestria Girls meets Choose-Your-Own-Adventure novels. This is a short book that a reader of the appropriate reading level can probably finish exploring within a couple hours, less than that if they go directly for the "good ending" without meandering down side paths (but where's the fun in that?). It's an interesting complement to the animated special "Sunset Shimmer's Backstage Pass" because the plot varies slightly, with different magical mechanics and some scenes that don't appear in the animation. A reader who enjoys the franchise will probably still enjoy this book even if they've seen the animated version. (spoilers follow) The best change in this adaptation is the addition of a surprisingly sober scene between Sunset Shimmer and Pinkie Pie where the former directly apologizes for scapegoating and snubbing the latter. This doesn't visibly happen in the animated special (although dialogue implies there was *some* sort of explanation that a time loop is happening), and having that emotional resolution is unexpectedly moving in a story that's otherwise light fare. The book's principal weakness is one shared across the CYOA genre. Lots of paths that seem interesting end up funneling the reader into a "bad ending." While there are inevitably limitations to how much "choice" a CYOA book of limited pages can incorporate, getting funneled into familiar bad endings via unfamiliar paths gets tedious. A reader might end up feeling punished for trying to read more. It's hard to avoid feeling like there was a missed opportunity to lean into the time loop premise and allow a reader to experience bad "paths" but still continue their story and try again. I gave this to my daughter for her 9th birthday and she loves it so much. She has read throw it 2 times. She likes picking where to go in the book. My little pony is one of her fav
