phenomenal
A book perfectly balancing heart ache and hope. The detail and description creates a tangible atmosphere, you could be in the hot sun or in the closet, living through the moments with the Ung family. This book alone has opened up my desire to learn more about the Cambodian genocide.

Wonderful , well written, heartbreaking story
Read this on a recent trip to Cambodia and would go as far as to say it is a life changing book with regards to the plight of refugees in Cambodia and currently in the world today . Wonderful to also read the sequel and follow life for the family after the war . A must for anyone visiting Cambodia!!

Essential read
This was a very well written book, that gives more details and insight into Cambodias difficult past. I must say that the first book was much better though. I would still recommend this book however, so buy it today and educate yourself on a vital part of modern history.

Great book, personal insight into the lives of refugees
This is an excellent follow up to "First They Killed my Father", and you need to have read that one to fully appreciate and understand "After they killed our father".This book is a very personal account of a family divided by the Khamer Rouge, and I found it very timely as it will give you an insight into why refugees (unwillingly) leave their country and how they can adapt and contribute to their adopted lands, while at the same time dealing with a traumatic past and forced separation from their family.Despite the severe topic, Loung Ung inserts plenty of humour and makes it very readable.
