My friends and I built an ornamental steel fence and handrail around my pool deck. I bought this drill because I didn't want to hand drill over 480 9/16" holes in 1" channel steel. After having to drill just one of these holes with a corded hand drill, I'll have to say that my money was well spent on this drill press. It's already paid for itself and I'm sure I'll be using it for years to come. Assembly was easy and the packaging and shipment were outstanding as I've come to expect from desertcart. Review: Crappy Paint Job! - This is my 2nd Shop Fox benchtop drill press. My original one I gave to my neighbor as I hadnt used it very much. Now I found I have a need for one. As my original one, the paint job on this one SUCKS!! They really need to find a Chinese that knows how to paint. The paint is flaking off right out of the box. Either they didnt clean it properly or they didnt prime it. My original one from 2 years ago was the same and I called Woodstock on it. Evidently they did nothing to resolve it. Either paint it properly or dont paint it at all. Im going to remove the table and sand off the paint job. Shouldnt be too hard since most of it is already falling off. When I got it, I spent about an hour with rags and mineral spirits cleaning off the grease that was all over it. After I got it all assembled I ran a test and it passed with flying colors. Lets hope it lasts. Outside of the crappy paint job, it seems to be well made and does what I need done. UPDATE: Before I go to the trouble of sanding off whats left of the paint on the table. I emailed Shop Fox requesting a replacement table thats painted properly ( not holding my breath). Will see what happens. Truthfully, if the Chinese box hadnt been destroyed in shipping I would return this to desertcart for a different make. Will update if I hear from Shop Fox. 2/8/2013: Called Woodstock over 2 weeks ago and got a recording "We're closed, leave your phone number and we will call you back within 24 hours". Never happened!! Spend your money on a different company that cares. Because I got rid of mine because the belt would slip when drilling through a 1.5 inch oak **Q: What size is the base?** A: The bottom base that sits on the counter is 7 x 12.The drill platform is 7 x 6 1/2.I added a sheet of red oak and made a new drill platform as I felt that the 7 x 6 1/2 was too small. I need to know it’s diameter.** A: The Diameter of the column is 46 mm in diameter with a mechanical caliper. In inches it is very close to 1 - !3/16. Compare the following. *by A***V on September 11, 2020* Lots of bad reviews. New to woodworking. Dupped into it by the dual functionality. Once I began using the drill I realized it was useless. 1. The table adjustments are horrible compared to others in this range. Nonworking for precision and the wrench won't fit in many positions. The drill requiters a lot of time to set up to get close to what you want. Never spot on. 2 On mine, the chuck got loose inside the housing about a week out of the box. It now bangs back and forth about 16th of an inch. Also at the bottom of the travel, the play pushes the bit 1/16th out of alignment. The gauges on the drill are useless and the jam nut rod wiggles around. 3. I ordered the recommended shop fox sanding set. Not included with the drill. The drums are to large for the table inserts. Until I spend more and track down the right size or parts. The oscillating sanding is useless. 4. Too late to return. My inexperience with drills and Shop Fox's advertising has provided me with a useless to I need to replace. Look before you leap. Read the reviews.
