There are four (4) rubber resistance washers that come with the mask, in the box. You have to open the mask to see how they are to be placed. They are constructed to create more resistance based upon the manner each is inserted into the mask. When one is placed in the inward resistance position with the other placed in the outward position for "no resistance," you get levels 1 to 8 from switching the levers from position 1 to 4 on each side of the mask, incrementally (i.e., one lever on each side of the mask). When you place both rubber washers into the inward resistance position (i.e., they face the same way), you then attain levels 9 to 16 when switching the levers. Add the 3rd and 4th rubber washers (outward x 4, inward x 4) for levels 17 to 24. Be sure to not lose or discard the extra two rubber washers. Feels a little pricy for what it is like it should cost a few bucks cheaper for what you're getting. But it still works good and it's easy to use. I use just sitting around hanging out, current record I'd 65 min. You definitely notice a change in your breathing habbits.
