First taste of black walnuts. Has a synthetic, plastic-y, perfumed flavor. Is that normal, or were mine contaminated?

I have ordered these black walnuts repeatedly. Black walnuts have a unique, strong flavor. I wouldn’t describe it as synthetic or plastic-y, but I could understand “perfumed” if you’re expecting them to taste like traditional (English) walnuts. Black walnuts have a stronger, bolder flavor. I had them as a child. My parents made homemade black walnut ice cream. We loved it. My husband does not like them at all. Perhaps it’s an acquired taste, like scotch . . . or mackerel.

are these already shelled?????

They would have to be. Have you ever tried to crack a black walnut shell? The shell is hard as concrete. They are delicious but they are different from english walnuts.
