Are they possible to be washed without falling apart?

They wash well. I even died mine. I'm a novice dye-er and the dye only took on the threading and very faintly on band itself.

Can these be folded in half lengthwise so that they are an inch wide rather than 2" wide?

Probably, but I use these in my L'BRI business for facials and the wider they are the better it holds their hair back while we are doing facials.

Are they too big for 8 year old head?

No, they fit pretty well for my 9 and 10 year olds

Would these work well to attach buttons to for healthcare professionals to attach their masks to instead of their ears?

I don’t think they are thick enough or strong enough. They stretch out very easy and are not strong elastic. They are made out of a thin knit material. They are really for one time use.
