My review would've been different if it were not for the AMAZING customer service. GREAT PENCILS!
I first received these pencils and was just so excited! I opened it, and in the whole set, there were 5 pencils that were broken or defective and the tin they came in had a big dent in it making it hard to open and then stay shut. Still, for the price and the sheer number of pencils a few that were broken, still a great deal. The seller had sent an email to check on how I liked my purchase I wrote back saying I loved the way they put pigment down, blended and worked with water, but there were these 5. I offered to take pictures with my phone so she could see, she said don't worry about that, apologized for the 5 messed up pencils and dented tin and said she would ship a new set to me and I would have them within 2 days. I asked how I should go about sending the original set back and she told me to keep them, and I'll just have extras! I received the 2nd set of 72 in exactly 2 days, not one thing wrong with them or the tin. I have been happily using them for months now. I can find no fault in them. I have 2 smaller sets of much more expensive watercolor pencils and these outperform one of them hands down. I can't compare with the other set as it's like comparing apples and oranges, my other ones are very, very soft pencils. If you are looking for a nice large set of good watercolor pencils with oodles of colors to work with, just buy these. Oh, and they layer crazy good too, wet on wet, dry on wet, dry on dry. THANK YOU! Great pencils, REALLY GREAT TEAM and COMPANY!

Outstanding budget friendly watercolor pencils
Product: I am not very good with watercolors and prefer watercolor pencils for more control. I own the Derwent Inktense pencils and enjoy them, but sometimes they are too vibrant for the look I'm going for. I have tried several different sets of budget-friendly watercolor pencils and I have to say, I am very impressed with the Castle Arts. They are as smooth and creamy as the regular Castle Art Pencils, which I also love. These watercolor pencils lay down nicely and blend beautifully. The pencils are octagon shaped so they are easy to grip and don't hurt your hands. They sharpen easily with no breakage. Though they come pre-sharpened, it is not a very fine point. I recommend sharpening before use. The first page I colored with them was in a book with Create Space paper since we know it is some of the most difficult paper to work with. The normal paper buckling occurred, but as you can see, the picture turned out great (though I am not an artist by any means.) I Only used the Castle Art Watercolor Pencils with fine liners and gel pens for accents. All the shadowing and gradient is from the pencils. You can not go wrong with these for the price. Seller: These pencils are lifetime guaranteed, I received a lovely note from the seller upon purchase asking if I had any problems. I did have one issue with my set. One of the pencils was defective and kept losing the lead when I sharpened it. I contacted the seller about the problem and requested a replacement pencil. They sent me an entire replacement set. The communication with the seller was very pleasant an professional. I was impressed with their genuine concern regarding customer satisfaction. I will definitely purchase from this seller again.

Nicer than most
I bought these because I signed up for some online watercolor classes and they use these as well as tubes of watercolor paint and the watercolor cakes we all remember from our childhood. These were recommended by the artist teaching one of the classes. The other artist prefers Prismacolor but they cost more. I really like this set. It comes in a tin box with three removable trays of pencils. Each pencil is color coded and had the name of the color on it. The lead color matches the color of the pencil fairly well. There is also a legend inside the lid that lists all of the pencils, their number and color as well as a color square next to it. The core is soft enough to get depth of color without breaking the lead. The colors are vibrant. They also layer nicely, especially when adding a light brush of water over combined colors. My only complaint is there are no primary colors - as in red, blue, yellow. Instead there are various blues, reds and yellows with names like brilliant yellow, primrose yellow, signal red, cadmium red, scarlet red, etc. Otherwise it's a very nice set and I would buy it again.

Great for beginner or seasoned artists
I have a 24 set of Derwent watercolor pencils, but was wanting to find a larger set, without spending a small fortune. When I found this listing for a 72 set by Castle Arts, that was under $40, I was really excited, but apprehensive about how good the quality would be. I read through the reviews, and decided to just give them a chance. And I am glad that I did. These are a nice affordable set, without losing out on quality. Not only did this set have a very nice selection of colors, with several light to dark shades of each color. But the leads lay down very smoothly and creamy, which is something I look for in pencils I use. The lead is not as soft as other watercolor pencil brands Iโve tried. These leads are more firm, like regular colored pencil lead. I assume that they have more binder in them than other brands do, but this isnโt a flaw for me. They can reach a deep vibrant opacity, with very little pressure needed. I tested them both wet and dry, and am very pleased with both methods. These pencils can be used in several light layers, using the wet technique, or can have a rich vibrant result if used dry. Definitely a very versatile product. So far, I love these pencils. The company was very friendly, and prompt with delivery. Very pleased with my purchase.

Great product and very good price.
These were an impulse purchase, and I am not at all disappointed. They lay down smoothly (circular strokes give great coverage) and easily melt into water without being too runny. I am working on a set of illustrations and they gove me better control and precision than watercolors alone.

These are really lovely pencils
It's funny....I bought these in 2020 and now in 2025, I am just trying them out! hahahaha! I was so pleasantly surprised and amazed at how lovely these pencils really are. The colors are so vivid and once applying the water, they transform your painting into a totally different picture without a grainy appearance, but smooth and even instead. So very easy to apply and I recommend them to artists who might be on the fence as to whether to buy them or not. I imagine they will be great for times when you just want to touch things up, like adding a shadow here or there, or darkening something in your work, making color a little more vivid or intense in a certain area, etc. Happy Painting!!!!

Great Watercolour Pencils
Excellent product for the price point . Pencils sold as a set only so they cannot be individually replaced which is unfortunate. Colours are vibrant and easy to layer great for beginners.
