Weaving in the Peruvian Highlands: Dreaming Patterns, Weaving Memories

I bought this book because of an upcoming trip to Peru and a fascination with hand woven textiles. This book helped me appreciate the fine weaving I saw in the highlands of Peru, particularly in the town of Chinchero. The authentic voice of the weavers is expressed in beautiful photos and in their own words. The author states, "Weaving is a living art, an expression of culture, geography, and history. It ties together with an endless thread the emotional life of my people." Thank you, Nilda Alvarez, for giving us a window into that rich life! I brought home several lovely textiles which I cherish all the more because of this wonderful introductory book.

I am an art teacher, I met the author when I was in Peru. She is a lovey person and the people of her village are beautiful and very talented. I got this book as a reference when I’m teaching weaving.

Excellent illustrations and discussions of culture and life style. I purchased this book for a friend who is very knowledgeable about textiles and weaving. She was delighted with it. She plans to travel there the later part of the year and found this book helpful.

This book is about weaving and so much more: the culture of the highlands, fiber preparation, dyeing, and how the garments are traditionally worn. The photographs are amazing, providing detail for the various textiles.

This book was a reference of many patterns, types of clothing and bags. I liked the concise and easy reading of the author. Using this book has enabled me to plan my future as a spinner and weaver when I have to downsize.

A LOT TO LEARN ABOUT THE PERUVIAN HIGHLANDS. THIS BOOK GIVES INFORMATION ON THE VARIED WEAVING PATTERNS AND THEIR ORIGINS AROUND THE COUNTRY BY LOCATION.

This book was a present to my mum who spins and weaves.She visited Peru a few years ago and saw a review of the bookin the American magazine "Wild Fibre" and thought this would bea great gift. Well it was recieved with great appriciation and ondiscovering who had written the book my Mum had actually been to thecentre and meet the people so she could relate to every word in thebook. The place is exactly as it is descibed and the book had not beenput down until it had been read cover to cover. For this to happen,from experience knowing my Mum, it has to be a really good book.

Another wonderful and inspiring book about the textiles of Peru and the people who live to make them. With all the state of the art equipment most weavers still cannot produce anything close to the designs that the people of Peru produce without the aid of hi-tech computer designing - their designs are carried in their heads and passed from generation to generation - long may that last.
