Can they be washed in a washing machine?

They cannot be washed in the washer as the have a dense 2mm board on the inside of the cloth. They can be cleaned with a damp sponge by hand. Hopefully this answers your question.

Are all 4 sides made with the dense cardboard ?

Yes, all 4 sides have thick cardboard, plus one for the bottom. Very sturdy. Well made. I just received mine. They look like they will last forever.

What are the bags made out of?

The bags exterior is made from 80 gsm non-woven fabric. The bag's skeleton is dense 2mm cardboard which enables it to maintain its sturdy box like structure when the foldable flap is used as a reinforced bottom.

Are the handles sewn as well as riveted?

Yes, they are also sewn. And only the covers on the rivets come off - I have not had a rivet come out.
