## Description

For the first time, the final years of one of the world's most captivating rock showman are laid bare. Including interviews from Freddie Mercury's closest friends in the last years of his life, along with personal photographs, Somebody to Love is an authoritative biography of the great man. Here are previously unknown and startling facts about the singer and his life, moving detail on his lifelong search for love and personal fulfilment, and of course his tragic contraction of a then killer disease in the mid-1980s. Woven throughout Freddie's life is the shocking story of how the HIV virus came to hold the world in its grip, was cruelly labelled 'The Gay Plague' and the unwitting few who indirectly infected thousands of men, women and children - Freddie Mercury himself being one of the most famous. The death of this vibrant and spectacularly talented rock star, shook the world of medicine as well as the world of music. Somebody to Love finally puts the record straight and pays detailed tribute to the man himself.

Review: An astounding book focusing on both Freddie and his intrinsic link to HIV and AIDS - I brought this book as I’ve been a long time fan of both Freddie and Queen...and was also aware that the recent Bohemian Rhapsody biography had both whitewashed and altered certain aspects of Freddie’s life (i.e that it really toned down his love life and also altered the timeline for when Freddie told the band that he had HIV/AIDS- which was much later than depicted in the film). So although I knew that this boom was going to likely touch on HIV and AIDS I didn’t realise that it would weave this so intrinsically into his story - going back to how HIV started in 1908 and it’s journey from the Congo and across the world. This however doesn’t take away from the fact that this is a bio about Freddie either - and when the development of HIV runs in parallel with Freddie’s life and his lifestyle this is done in such a way that it’s 100% relevant. There’s also a huge insight into the legend that is Freddie - his song writing, his huge part as a member of Queen...but also his struggle with keeping his lifestyle a secret from the world whilst also fully taking part in the emerging gay culture. I literally couldn’t put this book down / the amount of research that went into it was amazing and it includes insight from many of those who were around Freddie. The opening chapter alone is so well written that you feel that you’re in the room with Freddie and hearing the thoughts inside his head. Thoroughly recommended if you a) want to cut through the PG version of the Bohemian Rhapsody film (which is still an epic film - it just annoyed and amazed me that it glossed over so much and also altered so key facts) and b) learn more about how HIV transformed the lives of so many people as well as Freddie
Review: AMAZING BOOK - SUCH A GOOD READ - I bought this book for my mum who was interested in reading it - when she was finished I asked her for it and haven't been able to put it down - being 25 years old myself and only 6 moths old when he died I have learned so much about frieddie mercury which I've never known. I've always liked queens music but never really gave his sad death a lot of thought as it wasn't really my era. After reading this however I have realised how hard they all worked and how difficult it was for their band to become what it did indeed become. It goes into so much detail and tells you a lot about the virus and how it originated and spread - it's extremely heartbreaking to read at times but it has opened my eyes to so much of the virus and I find it all fascinating but very sad too. It talks of the difficulty Freddie was facing throughout his whole life - coming out and then aids. Really amazing book would recommend it to anyone - I would even say you don't even have to be a big queen fan to enjoy this book just a brilliant read.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Interesting read about a very complex man
*by M***G on 31 August 2023*

Very well researched book about Mercury, his life and loves and the history of aids... the author seemed to very sure within a window of a month or so when he contracted the illness. The last few chapters are a painful read as he went gradual then accelerated decline.. Good book well recommended
