The tone is great, with very deep bass, but it is truly a one-trick-pony sound-wise. A Hofner 500 (or any other bass for that matter) offers many more tones if that is what you're after. If you want a cool bass that has a deep, thumpy, 60's tone, this will probably satisfy you. Nice workmanship (better than the originals for the most part). I would have liked slightly better fret work, but it plays up and down the board fine. truss rod works well, volume/tone pots are full-sized, but the jack is cheap, so I replaced it with a Switchcraft. The case is fantastic. I really like this bass. As I said, shop carefully. This bass new can vary by as much as $1000....what?...yes. I saw them for $1600 and also for $450 new. used they range from $600-900. that is nutty stuff.
