Nice Alternative to More Expensive Mauls
I purchased the wooden handle version of this item for use with stamping leather goods. I am relatively new to working with leather and did not want to spend $60+ to buy some of the more "professional" mauls I've seen both on leatherworking sites and Amazon (such as the Al Stohlman tools). This tool seemed like a good place to get started without having to spend a lot of money. Prior to ordering I'll be honest and say I was a little hesitant about what to expect in terms of quality. I was pleasantly surprised by what I received. The maul is well balanced and has a good weight on the head. The handle has a good contour and is easy to hold. I've found it very easy to use. The nylon is quite tough and has withstood several months of use with minimal signs of wear. The handle appears to be pine. It is nicely stained and finished, but I do worry a little about a softer wood standing up to regular use over an extended period of time. But for now I've had no problems and am pleased with this purchase. For the price I could not expect much more. I've included photos showing the measurements of the one I received as there seems to be some discrepancies. The tool I received measures approximately 8" in length and weighs 12.2 ounces.

Extremely fast shipping, very good quality
The tool is the perfect weight and dimensions for tooling leather, and robust enough to punch holes in thick leather and mount hardware. Mine has already seen some hard use, and there's hardly a mark on the striking face at all. The comfortable handle lets you reposition your hand for heavy strikes to delicate work. Update: This is still going strong, and is my go-to maul for all leatherwork. I do use a nylon/rubber mallet for any really heavy work, but this maul performs virtually all my tooling. It hasn't chipped or warped--still highly recommend.

This is ok for a beginner maul
If you're not sure a maul is right for you..why spend a fortune? This is ok for a beginner maul. It's weighs in at 13.3 oz with a 4.5" handle length, a head length of 2.5" diameter of 2". It's on the small side. Good for tool stamping properly cased leather with normal sized stamps. Not for large stamps and not for punching holes in leather.

but decided to read the great reviews this product was receiving
I purchased this as an alternative to the ridiculously priced Al Stohlman maul. I was hesitant at first, primarily because it is a China product, but decided to read the great reviews this product was receiving. I decided to take a chance and I am very pleased. This is my first maul as opposed to a rawhide mallet, so I'm in the process of going through a learning curve, but I could not be more pleased with the construction. I have a bit of a shoulder problem and using the rawhide mallet (due to it limited weight) is aggravating the shoulder issue at times. I learned from reading one review that the weight of this maul is just a little over 1 lb, and that is perfect for my use. Great product and the price is very reasonable considering the alternatives of the Al Stohlman product. I've never used an Al Stohlman maul, but I would be very surprised if it was that much different in performance. I glad I purchased this and if you are considering purchasing one also, I think you will be pleasantly surprised.

Great tool
I've been using a rawhide mallet for my leather working hobby. It was great, did the job but was a pain at times if you didn't hit it head on. I was dubious about this tool since it was shaped weirdly (to me at least) but when it arrived I saw how useful the shape could be. First off: It's VERY top heavy so when you strike a stitching chisel it drives it straight down instead of an arc that the mallet does. Really the only complaint I have is construction as the bolt holding it together often loosens which makes me nervous that the head will fly off and shatter a window. Be mindful of this and you should be good to go.

Great Poly Mallet!
This is a great mallet and a great price. Being new to leather craft, I didn't want to sink thousands into a hobby I wasn't sure I would like. I have small hands so I got the small size and just love it. It has weight and heft to it. The poly surface was perfectly smooth. The shaft is solidly attached and handsomely finished. I have to confess when I use it I get this image of Vulcan at the forge :D I highly recommend this poly mallet to all my fellow newbie leathercrafters, who want to get the essential tools but aren't sure they will like the hobby.

Great maul depending on your needs.
I've been using this maul for maybe 2 months now. It's small relative to most I've seen but I've come to really appreciate the size. It works well for stamping and tapping a pricking iron. If you're looking to this for punch work, keep looking. It's held up well through fairly heavy use. I'll update if that changes.
