I am not sure it's almost"8" fit.

When using it for a salad in the summer, do you chill the container before using it? Do you recommend it for this application?

I would chill it first if it wasn't so huge! Too big to fit into my smaller sized refrigerator. I should have gotten a smaller container. Probably good for a pot luck for 50 hungry guests..
