decent quality carbon steel tap & die set with handles
This is a decent quality Irwin/Hanson tap & die set (Irwin now owned by Newell Rubbermaid) in carbon steel. The HSS steel sets don't have as many pieces and are much harder to find (not to mention much more expensive). Taps and dies are generally finished well with clean cutting threads. The set comes with all the tap and die holder that you would need for the various sizes of tooling which are in the set. The larger two die handles have an apparently steel center with aluminum handles; while the tap handles of all sizes appear to be steel. I'm guessing that is to save some weight, but i worry about the strength of the handles and the tiny cross section where they are threaded. Have not needed to cut anything yet, but did clean up a couple of pieces and verify an unknown bolt which showed up. The company i purchased this through has given me very good service regarding a minor problem from the factory and Irwin has been good with their service.

tap and die set
a reasonable selection for a novice for tap and die work. In my case not machinist but general hobby type mechanic stuff and dealing with broken bolts and damaged threads in automotive related work. For serious work it appears one might be well served to buy the common sizes in sets (tap and die) from a tool shop supplier.

Dies quality issues Bad finish Metal flashing Those taps are not stamped: USA 5mm-0.80 4mm-0.75 4mm-0.70 3mm-0.50 Very deceived.

Short Pieces of set
Have ordered this kit twice and has come short pieces each time so have returned them
