I'm interested in these as desktop speakers (connected by Toslink) -- how would these do as desktop speakers?

I think desktop use is their strong suit. I auditioned a pair, but went with the KEF LS50 with an amplifier combo instead because I had thr space, but I think thr LSX would do very well on a desktop particularly since you can adjust the sound a great deal via the app. A very good all in one solution.

How could this pair of lsx can be paired or hook with the ls50 w up, to make them sound the 4 speakers at same time, kind of 2 front -2 surround ??

They cannot be "connected" as a 2 front and 2 rear system. they are designed to be independent 2-channel systems or used as a 2-channel audio system for a TV.

Are these returnable? i am buying them because airplay2. according to some reviewers they are notairplay2 ready yet.

i returned mine due to compatibility issues with no problem - keep everything
