This five-book paperback box set of the classic series features Garth Williams's illustrations in gorgeous full color. The books in the timeless Little House series tell the story of Laura Ingalls Wilder’s real childhood as an American pioneer and are cherished by readers of all generations. They offer a unique glimpse into life on the American frontier and tell the heartwarming, unforgettable story of a loving family. Little House in the Big Woods Wolves and panthers and bears roam the deep Wisconsin woods in the 1870s. In those same woods, Laura lives with Pa and Ma, and her sisters, Mary and Baby Carrie, in a snug little house built of logs. Pa hunts and traps. Ma makes her own cheese and butter. All night long, the wind howls lonesomely, but Pa plays the fiddle and sings, keeping the family safe and cozy. Farmer Boy As Laura Ingalls is growing up in a little house in Kansas, Almanzo Wilder lives on a big farm in New York. He and his brothers and sisters work hard from dawn to supper to help keep their family farm running. Almanzo wishes for just one thing—his very own horse—but he must prove that he is ready for such a big responsibility. Little House on the Prairie Pa Ingalls decides to sell the little log house, and the family sets out for Indian country! They travel from Wisconsin to Kansas, and there, finally, Pa builds their little house on the prairie. Sometimes farm life is difficult, even dangerous, but Laura and her family are kept busy and are happy with the promise of their new life on the prairie. On the Banks of Plum Creek Laura's family's first home in Minnesota is made of sod, but Pa builds a clean new house made of sawed lumber beside Plum Creek. The money for materials will come from their first wheat crop. Then, just before the wheat is ready to harvest, a strange glittering cloud fills the sky, blocking out the sun. Soon millions of grasshoppers cover the field and everything on the farm. In a week's time, there is no wheat crop left at all. By the Shores of Silver Lake Pa Ingalls heads west to the unsettled wilderness of the Dakota Territory. When Ma, Mary, Laura, Carrie, and baby Grace join him, they become the first settlers in the town of De Smet. And Pa begins work on the first building in what will soon be a brand-new town on the shores of Silver Lake. Review: Wonderful quality books! - Glossy pages, full color pictures, wonderful historical stories. Love! Review: Perfect for My Tween Girl - I bought this set for my granddaughter (10 1/2), as a way to introduce her to recent American history in a relatable context. WIlder's memoirs are a late frontier classic and were an immediate hit with my granddaughter. She is working her way through them now (a great summer vacation time filler), and reports on her progress to me regularly. The set is printed on quality paper, well bound for paperbacks (something I generally avoid), and the illustrations are beautifully, and sprinkled liberally throughout each volume. The slipcase fits snugly, which helps to keep the individual volumes in good condition. An overall excellent value and an important read.

If you buy these you won't regret it
I ordered this box set for my little boy(yes it's not just for girls) for Christmas. We had been reading my books, which I recieved for Christmas back when I was eight. He loved the stories. He is very imaginative and spent weeks hunting panthers, just like Pa. His only complaint about the books was that the pictures were not in color. Also, because the my books were old and well used (read starting to fall apart) and they were a gift from my grandmother, I wouldn't let him read them without me. He really wanted his own set to read on his own. I was only going to get the first two books(Little House in the Big Woods, and Little House on the Prarie) for him. They have larger print and more pictures, the others are a little above his reading level with smaller print, more pages and fewer pictures. But when I found this set with color pictures I knew I had to get it. These books were the only thing he asked for at Christmas. After he opened them, we didn't see him the rest of the day, he was off with his books. The pictures are beautiful and he loves the color. Also the pages are much higher quality. A slick, thicker paper. More like what you would find in a quality hardback picture book than a child's chapter book. These books, especially the first two are great to read out loud to younger readers. My son is in 1st grade, but even his little sister who is 4 enjoys listening to these stories and they hold her attention. Also for a beginning reader these books are great. They are challenging but not to complex for kids to sound out. I would say the first two are about a 2nd - 3rd grade level and the others a 3rd-5th grade. If you buy these you won't reget it.

Mama's and Papas !
The pictures are so beautifully done and the story is just the same as it always has been. My mom used to read these to me when I was little and now I read them to my kids! They love the pictures just as much as I do. The box itself is sturdy and beautiful as well. I also got this for my 6yo to start reading as she has zoomed through every child's book with ease. My 8yo struggles with reading and he is slower about it. So if you're getting these for your kids to read - remember that these books were in different times and you may not remember the WORDS and SLANG used about people during these times. There was only a few words and slangs used in the first book that I wasn't prepared for. So educate your kids for sure before allowing them to read or before reading to them. Mentally this would be better for a maybe 10 year old or up. Otherwise I think it could be a good book for any avid child reader 6 and up. If your child can read and only struggle on more advanced words - let them read! We got through the first book with a chapter every night or two within a month. Excited to start book 2. Keep on reading!

The set only has the first 5 books, but has gorgeous color illustrations
This boxed set of Laura Ingalls Wilder's Little House of the Prairie series of books only contains Books 1-5 [a puzzle indeed, why couldn't the publishers have made the entire series available?]. The books in this set, in order are: Little House in the Big Woods, Farmer Boy, Little House on the Prairie, On the Banks of Plum Creek, and By the Shores of Silver Lake. Though it is not the complete set, this boxed collection is worth splurging on as it is a full-color collector's edition. The illustrations by Garth Williams are beautiful and truly evoke the wonderful world written about by Laura Ingalls Wilder all those years ago. The paper is of high quality and has a glossy finish to it, the text type is large enough that it won't strain one's eyes, and is sturdy enough to be held and read over and over again. I believe the other books in the series not included in this set are also available to be purchased individually[also illustrated in full color by Garth Williams]. The missing titles are: The Long Winter, Little Town on the Prairie, These Happy Golden Years, and The First Four Years. Fans both young and old will enjoy these timeless stories of family, community, faith and challenges, and this sumptuously illustrated boxed set is sure to be a keepsake for collectors, and something that can be passed down.

A Timeless Story for mom, dad, and the kids.
I read this series to my children and am beyond thrilled that my daughter is reading it to her boys: ages 3 and 5. They love it. The story is instructive, interesting and the life of a pioneer family is very compelling in this heavy tech age. My grand boys love to work and they love to read about danger and adventure and hard, enjoyable labor. This classic will delight every age - kids, parents and grandparents. It is an autobiographical story that encourages, stimulates the imagination and brings you close to what life on the solitary prairie was like. The illustrations are wonderful and sweet. A winner!!!

Classic books, great edition
The wonderful reminiscences of Laura Ingalls Wilder of her childhood with her family in Wisconsin, Kansas and Minnesota. Beautiful set. Shame it was a little damaged when I received it Perhaps a little too advanced for little Miss 6 year old, but she's engaged with it.

Great book and an important historical record.
Forget the saccharine sweet tv series, this is a child’s diary of what it was really like for a dirt poor frontier family. These books stand accused if racism for “negative attitudes to coloured and Native American people.” This series takes place in the mid 1800’s, in England, Victoria is on the throne and the British Empire is at the height of its power. In one of the most turbulent times in American and world history, this is a family struggling to survive. In their time coloured people are “freed slaves” and the only stories they have heard of native Americans is of uprisings and Indian massacres in the newspapers. The first time they actually see Indians Laura’s dad is away., there are 2 of them, they knock at their door, Laura’s mum is terrified, she is convinced she and her daughters are about to be slaughtered, or worse. She opens the door, they manage to indicate they want food and water, she has little food but gives as much as she can, hoping they will be appeased. They eat and drink-ravenously, like they are starving- then go away. Laura’s mother gives thanks for her deliverance. Later they see many Indians pass, looking exhausted and sad, they don’t know at the time, but they are being moved to the reservations. Much later they get to hear the war drums. Having had to move, it happens a lot! They have (accidentally,) wandered onto reservation land, they are evicted by the government, before the next Indian war begins. Later still Laura’ father, now defeated by another disaster and working as a labourer on the railroad is warned by a passing Indian, that a “winter harder than any in living memory is coming. He believes him and moves to town and almost bankrupting himself laying in stores. Ther follows a winter of biblical proportions. Infrastructure collapses across America. Laura’s family survive, just! But wouldn’t without Laura’s husband one-day, stepping in with epic heroism. Don’t judge Laura and her family by our standards, their own standards are high enough. Judge them as time was then. This isn’t about racism or politics, it’s an inspirational series of true stories about love and family. History unfolds around them and they react as best they can, trying to be the best people they can. It shows what can be survived by sticking together as a family and never giving up.
