Ok - i found the correct adapter and ssd card for pcie x1.  will they work as a boot device?

To piggy back this answer and anyone wanting to boot from this device on unsupported hardware, if you use open core you can use it as a boot device, you will however need a dedicated disk to boot open core from, you can use a flash drive or whatever. Here's an example I have a 4tb data drive in my 2010 Macpro 200mg of that drive I use for open core , then open core will boot this device. You can also use a USB thumb drive or even CD/DVD. Open core is awesome and doesn't replace your firmware but you'll immediately boot into their firmware after the post screen. Open core respects windows boot loader and Mac blessings, it also supports and respects grub. So for example if I install open core on my Mac(watch I suggest everyone does) changing the startup disk will not change open core from loading but open core will respect those changes. Same thing with windows it's an awesome firmware and allows my 2010 Mac pro with 2 - 6 core 3.46ghz and 128 gb of ram to stay current running the latest version of Monterey or even windows 11.

How do I get another screw? I received 4 screws, 2 small and 2 larger. The problem is that 1 of the larger screws is larger then the correct size.

You can get them in a kit. Amazon has them, just search for "nvme screw kit". You can also take the correct screw to a hardware store and if you can find someone who knows how to look them up, a replacement screw is maybe 25 cents in the US. Or you can remove the standoff that holds the screw and bring it with you to a hardware store and try screws that look right until one works.
