Fatal Frost: DI Jack Frost series 2 (DI Jack Frost Prequel)

Cheers me old China!
Thanks for yet another great example of how to write a detective story. Jack Frost must be a great character to write about. Sheer bloody determination to get the criminals while having to deal with his own superior officers who couldn't find their own backsides with a road map. We are looking at a man who takes life as it comes and doesn't suffer fools gladly, yet still keeps a sense of humour, and still gets the job done. This story brings the legend that is Frost alive and kicking, from in his early days, long may the author do so.

An engaging, but complicated read.
I enjoyed the book, and it held my attention. One of the features, and possibly flaws, of both the Wingfield and Henry Frost books is the number of separate threads running through them. So the reader, and Frost's character, have several crimes to follow through the narrative, as well as peripheral complications in Frost's flawed personal life. Midway through this one, I temporarily lost track of the plots and which characters belonged to which crimes. You do need to keep concentrating.I find Henry's Frost almost a doppelgänger for Wingfield's, but not quite. Not enough to spoil the read. A bit like a Rory Bremner impression. The character is clearly recognisable, but not quite the original. All in all though, I am glad that Henry picked up the mantle and gave me more Frost stories to enjoy. The best recommendation I can give is that I plan to buy more in the series.

Slow and drawn out
Unfortunately this effort at extending the Frost series by another author falls short. It can’t seem to make its mind up whether “Jack” is as uncouth and ‘un pc ‘ as in the original books or more like his television character. The main story line is weak with an unsatisfactory conclusion and I grew tired of the number of times people had a cigarette or Mullet was a fool. Sadly I will not be reading more.

R.D. Wingfield turns in his grave
As a detective thriller this is passable but don't expect the Jack Frost of R.D. Wingfield who would never have written ungrammatically nor would there have been the now all too common four letter words. Above all Wingfield's Jack Frost was laugh out loud witty - but not this namesake. Presumably R.D.W.'s estate is short of cash.

A Developing Character
Just one of the original pair of writers continues the story of Sergeant Frost and his even more invisible wife. There are more murders in Denton, a whiff of racialism which turns out to be a red herring, and Frost devotes even more of his time to the job at the expense of those around him. We are still in the early days, when Frost is a slob at work but making a bit of an effort with his paperwork, and R.D. Wingfield's habitual thread of deliberate child abduction and murder remains absent and not terribly missed. This is a complex web of events, which I found a more satisfying read than the earlier book -- either it is better or I am more used to the new Frost, who unpicks things with a lot more help from his CID colleagues than the original Frost ever got! An absorbing tale and well worth reading.

Jack Frost - a story from the 80's
This is another great book featuring one of my favourite detectives Detective Inspector Frost. I read all RD Wingfield's books before the television series featuring David Jason bought him into the nations homes and loved all of them. The original books are not as light as the tv series something which James Henry continued with his first prequel First Frost (DI Jack Frost). In this outing Frost is coping with Mullet, dealing with some armed robberies before he has to investigate an apparent suicide in Denton. Meanwhile Britain is at war with Argentina, Frost smokes everywhere, drives a cortina and has to deal with the new 'race relations.' I didn't feel this outing was as dark as either the original series or First Frost but it was an enjoyable read and certainly faithful to Frost's character and style. Frost's marriage is in trouble and he is at a loss on how to handle the situation, he is always at work and going off at tangents to solve all the crimes in Denton. I am looking forward to his next outing; it is good to have the tie-in of a favourite detective with the 80's. First Frost (DI Jack Frost)

More of the same.
More of the same. Now becoming a little boring, I just don’t see how Frost could get away with all his failings. I know its only fiction but it doesn’t have even a small ring of truth, so I don’t think I will be reading any more of the prequels, they have become too much More of the same.

Going up the ladder
DS Frost, a crumpled, chain smoking one-off detective, is baffled by a series of crimes in Denton that baffle the Eagle Street nick - Superintendent Mullett in particular. This is another well written and enthralling tale of secret societies, burglary and murder. Solved by dogged policing and the uncanny instincts of Jack Frost. Time he was promoted.

........before the Frost!
I have never reviewed a book before, mainly because, whilst I totally get in to a book, I don't retain any of it once I've finished it. What I can say is that, I've read the original Frost books by R D Wingfield and could almost hear David Jason, as Jack Frost and so, I was dubious that a new author could satisfactorily, write prequels to the originals. The good news is that I could still hear the wonderful David Jason and Frost is as good as ever!

Excellent book
The author of this book has written a great book & has written in the great style of the original author. Great book & has you guessing who the murderer is all the way through.

Its not television Frost.
These were fast paced books which engaged the character well. It was difficult though in places where descriptions of the detective matched the vision of the television series Frost but enjoyable nevertheless

GREAT
Fabulous Frost tale with its main theme a murder. Great that James Henry has taken up the mantle and carried on with the famous Frost series. Hugely entertaining and enjoyable. I am pleased with my purchase and would buy again.

Fatal Frost
Everything you ever wanted in Frost is here! The quality of the writing is 'indistinguishable from real, All the pace, the confusion, the sheer bloody-mindedness of events are in this narrative and of course Frost emerges bloodied but only a bit bowed, but still doesn't get the girl.If you liked the originals, don't look at the name on the cover, just read and enjoy!

An easy, comfortable read
I found this a very comfortable read which I really enjoyed. Frost was exactly like his character portrayal on TV so it was easy to picture the scenes and feel warm to his character.
