The first move of the first game...
I am surprised that no one has mentioned that the very first move in the very first game in this book, which was made by no less than a young Siegbert Tarrasch himself as white (vs a Herr Mendelsohn) is: 1.a3!

Excellent edition of a classic
Excellent edition of a classic, true it may not contain all the biographical details of the original German book, but it was pleasant to play through the games.

Essential book, but what a lousy production!!
Out of my 500+ chess books, I would say I use this one the most. Tarrasch's annotations are great, succinct, and to the point, they are designed to teach and not confuse, and also shows you the development of his early career. You see many games against sub-GM opposition, and I always feel such games are invaluable to the developing player. (I also love, for this point, the two Euwe books, Chess Master Meets... etc.). Another main reason I consult this book often is that Tarrasch played such good, common sense openings. This book has tons of French Defences, from both sides, Queen's Gambits, Ruy Lopezes, and other things you don't see very often, like the Scotch Four Knights, The Goring Gambit, etc. The book has a nice opening index. It is an incredible book.So why one star? Because the book isn't really a "book" at all, but a lamely glued together collection of paper. The book quickly falls apart with any frequent use (and you will use it frequently). And by "falls apart" I mean the binding comes detached from the rest of the book and pages fall out. This type of cheapo production is a disgrace, especially on such a wonderful text as Tarrasch created.

300 games of chess
I agree with most of the reviewers that this is, indeed, a classic of chess. The problem is that I was disappointed with the English translation from the first page. Tarrasch writes about having a club foot on the page, but not in the English translation. Large portions of the autobiographical material, appear to have been edited out, but the annotations to the games are intact for the 3 games I did compare to the original. The diagrams of the games were not in the same position as the original editions. If you can read German, read it in German. A good book but poor translation. The edition Ohms copy of the original is expensive but recommended. Translating a book is difficult work. I appreciate the effort but not this result. I believe a non-published translation was made but this was talked about in the 1970's and would have come out by now.

I ordered a book, received loose sheets .... see the picture.
The 1 star rating is not for the contents of the book, but for the product. I would have given 5 stars for the content of the book. Tarrasch’s masterpiece should be in every chess lover’s bookshelf. However, the product I received is not a book but a bunch of loose sheets stacked between the covers. I have attached a picture. These sheets are probably computer generated printouts of the pdf of the original book by Hays. They seller should have at least bound the book into a real book before they consigned it to the buyer. This bad experience takes away 4 stars from the rating.
