How many oil re-use cycles is recommended? I know there comes a time when the oil goes bad, gets overloaded with flavors from previous cookings, etc.

Much depends on how much it is used. Rather than worry about the cycles, watch for the foam on top, any smoking at the temp you commonly used, dark coloring. Can you leave the plastic oil container in while frying?

Absolutely! You must have a good size fridge! I empty into plastic and put it in my utility room (washer/dryer room) and it lasts a long time. This last go round I did NOT strain it but left it in pan and fried 3 batches of wings over 3 weeks and it was really quite dark. I will always strain it now....was just lazy. I use peanut oil.

The oil filter it self, does it need to be replaced or cleaned?

The filter is a built in wire mesh type and doesn't need to be replaced as far as I can tell. The only part that may need to be replaced at some point is the rubber seal around it. Hope that helps. I've been using mine for a few months and absolutely love it. The best part of this fryer is the filter system and how you can drain your oil and store it in the plastic container until you need it again. It makes for cleaning and replacing the oil a breeze.

Yes it is very easy to clean. The reservoir alone with the heating element lifts out of the unit, that makes it a snape clean.
