Q: Why this watch require a battery?

I have the mechanical automatic.....not the quarts model. My watch does not require a battery . It is powered by a spring that you wind using the stem at first and then as you wear it daily, the motion of your wrist during your everyday activities activates the self winding mechanism inside the watch to keep the watch wound and running. There is no battery inside this kind of watch. A quarts watch however, does have a battery which must be replaced every couple years. They are generally a little more accurate and a little less expensive than a mechanical . My watch is accurate to within a couple seconds a day which is fine unless you are launching rockets or something. They make this watch in both a quarts and in mechanical. Just read the description carefully to be sure you get the one you want. My watch has the ETA Swiss made mechanical movement and those people have made millions of them and have the bugs worked out. I feel certain it will last me the rest of my life and can then be passed on. That's another reason I chose the mechanical. To me at least, there is just something about a mechanical which is more heirloom quality more so than a quarts. I hope this helps. Feel free to contact me again if I can be of further assistance. I do not work for Victorinox so my opinion is just a laymans opinion. But I am very satisfied with my watch and hope that you will be too. The blue on the watch face is just right....not blingy but instead sortly muted and classy looking.
