They sit relatively flat against the wall, and the different color choices allow some control over how bright the light is - different colors put out different amounts of light. The light is nice and soft, not harsh to look at light the previous nightlight we had.

Overall a great product! The photosensitivity is a little on the mediocre side for telling when the room light is on or off, but it's not a big deal. The light perfectly bright enough to be functional but not overkill. Would definitely recommend it for kids or adults, especially in the bathroom so you don't have to blind yourself at 3am
