Mel Bay Complete Jazz Clarinet Book

I am a clarinet teacher, and I use this book to introduce jazz concepts to my advanced beginners/intermediate students. And I love it. Although I will admit, the comments about it being mostly in flute range is very true - but at that development stage I am looking for more high not practice for my students. As clarinet players, many of my kids also start doubling saxophone at this age to play in Jazz band. These high notes are the same fingerings on sax and clarinet - don't know if that was the authors intent or if it just worked out.Education Concepts- One jazz idea/style is focused on at a time - only combining them at the end.- All jazz articulations are given syllables "do-den" that bring attention to both the beginning and end of notes- The songs are very cute, and fun to play.BindingSo the binding is defiantly not anything special. However, for how thick this book is for $17, I think it is a really good deal. It costs $3.99 at Kinko's to get is spiral bound if it bothers you that much or if you bust opened the binding and pages start falling out (not happened with my book yet, but I have done it many other music books).

This is a jazz book...works for flute, clarinet, and other instruments which can play within the ranges used for exercises contained in the book. What bothers me about this book is the only place the word "clarinet" appears is on the cover. Once you open it up, it's all about the flute then. It's mainly "technique & licks" based, IMO. I see no reason why they couldn't do a "search and replace" and publish the exact same book which would then come across as less of a cheat. Besides, this, however, I think the book is fine for what it is.

Helpful book, but it should be reissued with a CD or downloadable audio tracks to hear how the examples should be played. I would pay $5+ extra for audio.

The contents of the book are great but you can't open it without purchasing new binder ( The spiral type) The cost is $50.00. Why don't you sell the book in useable condition and charge a little more.

The book is written for beginners who want to learn about jazz. One thing I disagree with the book is the title. It could never be a Complete jaz clarinet book, but surely it is an excellent start to jazz clarinet.I would recommend the book to everybody who wants to learn technics of quality jazz clarinet.

Excellent easy to follow format with all the variations you need. A must for the serious learner of clarinet or Jazz
