Professionally applied product but it’s pretty ineffective. Not happy.

I really like this stuff and use it in conjunction with Odie's Oil and top it off with Odie's Wax. I did, however, have a little learning experience with the product recently that I feel others should know about. I recently finished a keepsake box from African Mahogany and Walnut Burl and after first rubbing in the oil discovered that my Wood Butter had hardened in the jar. I lost about two thirds of the jar to the hardening and wrote Odie's to see if it could be salvaged. I was advised to spray a product called Bloxygen into the open jar just prior to sealing it tightly. Exposure to air starts the Wood Butter to begin hardening and removing the oxygen from the container before closing will retard that process. Bloxygen purports do that. BTW, once the Wood Butter hardens in the jar all you can do is cut the dried product off and hope there's some softer, usable product below. I was lucky to find enough remaining to finish my project but it's definitely a lesson learned. Time to buy another jar AND a can of Bloxygen.

I just got my first bottle of this "butter" last week. It's more like paraffin than butter. A little goes a long way. If you are finishing a food safe surface, I think it best to use a food safe oil first, then put the butter over it. Odie's makes an oil as well, but a good food grade Mineral oil or Walnut oil can be used first, then the butter to finish it. I used the butter directly on the wood and it didn't seem to penetrate the wood like oil would. It does give the wood a decent shine and it does not darken the color of the wood as oil will, so if you like the color of your wood, you can use the butter without the oil, but I think you'll need to refresh the finish more often without using oil first. Just my opinion. As someone mentioned in an answer to a question, you might try heating the stuff up first. I think it may penetrate better if it was heated a little...
