I did some of the work outside. Some I did in the garage but vented. It smells for as long as it takes to cure. Pretty much dissipates within 48 hours. It has a woody odor not chemical smell so you should be able to tolerate it. **Q: Does this also stain the wood** A: This product is NOT a stain. However it does add an amber color to your wood. A previous comment described it as “dipped in honey” which is a great description! **Q: Is this food safe? I want a water-proof surface on a cutting board** A: It is good safe once it cures. You may not want to cut directly on the board though with this product as you will cut the hard finish you’ve put on. **Q: Can I put this on painted wood?** A: I'm not sure.
