Winner of an iParenting Media Award! This picture book appeals to the visual strengths of students on the autism spectrum, with color photos of students demonstrating various social skills in the correct (and sometimes incorrect) way. The skills depicted are meant to be read, role-played, corrected when necessary, role-played some more and, finally, to be practiced by the student in real-life social situations. โThought bubblesโ show what people are thinking during these interactions (not always what you hoped!). Practical, engaging, and down-to-earth, this is a valuable tool to help teens navigate the often-mysterious rules of social conduct in everyday situations. Helpful sections include: Conversation Building and Maintaining Friendships Asserting Your Feelings Conflict Resolution Asking Someone Out on a Date Dealing with School and Work Dealing with Mistakes Working with OthersโCompromising Job Interviewing Order the book alone or along with the Accompanying CD! (CD is meant to be used along with the book as a teaching tool. It contains all the photos from the book but no text. The CD can also be purchased alone if you already own this book.) Review: Great, but a subsequent book could address complex situations - I've been looking for a book like this. It shows normal ways kids relate to one another and show how things can go smoothly. It's helpful. However, real life teen situations involve power struggles the book doesn't address. This book has a scene, for example, where some girls invite a solitary girl to join then at their lunch table. In real life they might not invite her for a thousand reasons that the book doesn't cover--they might not want to be seen with her, she may be overweight or the wrong ethnicity, she may not be wearing the right brand of jeans, she may not be eating a salad, etc. Teen interactions are complicated. Review: Perfect - Good product, no damage, well packaged.

easy suggestions on learning how to socialize with peers
I bought this book for my 13 year old daughter who has Aspergers in order to help her get ready for high school. The moment I showed her the book she started reading it right away. It's has quick, simple, easy suggestions on learning how to socialize with peers. She and I, along with her therapist discuss how she should approach her peers, how to make friends etc., but what I like best about this book is that it has pictures to help her model the behavior we're trying to teach her. Given she is a head strong 13 yr old she'd rather take a lesson from something she reads or sees on her own, not from mom.

Good visuals
It is hard to find a social stories book with good visuals for visual learners. I rely on this one as it is photographs. I do think sometimes the stories are a little simple, but that is needed for most of the students or my son, where I use this. It helps break things down into "yes do this" or "no don't do it this way". Some we can talk about the subtle differences that can occur. It is a good jumping off point for further conversations.

Great book for social skills training
Great book! I used this for social skills group with autism spectrum teenagers and young adults. I put stickie notes on the words to let them guess emotions then let them see the words. This is a good quality product and I've actually purchased another one to use in a different setting with psychotic patients. As a clinician, I'm glad a book like this is available to the public because I think parents could actually use it with their autism spectrum youth.

Good Book!
My son is 13 years old with Aspergers, ADHD and Anxiety. We had this same book but for when he was younger and it helped tremendously - since he is so visual to understand. I was very excited when I found this book for him being older. Teenagers with Aspergers are a whole other issue. He likes this book, its easy to understand and makes sense to him because he can see it.

OK
This book is ok. The pictures are realistic which is a nice change compared to most materials out there. The only problem I have with this book is with the levels of my kids, looking at the pages and understanding the meaning, and how to apply to real life was a challenge. I really haven't used it much. It's a decent material to use for a jump start into topics.

If you have a teenage ASPY, this is the book for you.
I found this book on a table at a NAS teenage awareness event, and liked it that much I got one for my thirteen year old ASPY son. I then lent it to school and they got a copy of their own, they liked it so much. It is American and this comes across in the pictures and some of the writing, but the sentiment and the impact of the photo comic book style hits the spot. My son and I went through the book together and later he read it himself, occasionally he takes it down from the shelf or I leave it out at a particular page when a situation has arisen which needs a little social awareness! the pages about urinal awareness where inspiring as understandable I don't go in the male loos with my son, but he needs to understand the etiquette of were to stand and what's appropriate when using the male urinals, who knew a book would cover this subject? but it does and it does it well. a recommended buy.

clear and easy to use with teens
Bought to help with a young person in high school, yes it's got American terminology but you can change that and even use as a basis to create your own picture book.
