AmprobeAT-6030 Advanced Wire Tracer with 8 Sensitivity Modes, Signal Clamp

TIME IS MONEY. I’m not a contractor or a certified electrician. However, I worked as a gaffer (chief lighting technician) for 28 years on hundreds of TV commercials and a few movies as well as toured on the 1980 Van Halen tour as a master electrician. These experiences clarified one vital belief; time is money.Today, I have a home with five rooms listed on AIRBnB. Sometimes a guest will blow a breaker in their room, and my biggest challenge was the manhours and torment it would take to trace a circuit to the room. I set a goal to map and label each circuit in my home to its breaker, which I was hoping would save me time mapping rooms to breakers. To complete this goal, I tried recruiting friends or neighbors to help using walkie-talkies to communicate, and after a few hours they would politely excuse themselves, and my mapping project never completed.Several years ago, when I was at a Home Depot, I picked up an Ideal tracer which I was hoping would be a less painful experience. Unfortunately, the Ideal Tracer never worked. A few years ago, I found the Mastech Wire Tracer at an electrical supplier, which, cost more and took a ton of time trying to understand the directions. Unfortunately, like the Ideal, the Mastech didn’t deliver. Bummed that I couldn’t find an easy solution, and never completed my goal.Unfortunately, my circuit tracing journey took me back to a two-person walkie talkie solution until a friend told me about Amprobe launching a Wire Tracer (AT-6030) kit. I found a 6030 kit on Amazon (heads up! they’re expensive & hard to procure). However, after spending a few hours reading the QUICK START GUIDE, watching YouTube videos and doing a few tests in my basement, the tracer truly performed. Blown away how easy it is to trace items in my home to its correct breaker validated the cost and allowed me to finish the mapping project myself.I then labeled each breaker and its corresponding light, appliance and receptacle in my home using a Brother, label maker. With the ability to map a circuit to its breaker, I now have an idiot proof electrical map which helps is solve most of the electrical struggles in my home.BTW I haven’t used the Amprobe Tracer enough to evaluate all its functions. However, I am pleased the pain is over, and I can trace a circuit myself in less than five minutes. After sharing my success with those same friends and neighbors, I tried recruiting now want to borrow my Amprobe Tracer to map their homes. I decided to rent the tracer to them, and it will more than likely pay for itself in less than a year. Good Job Amprobe!

It will absolutely find the correct breaker if grounded to a separate grd then the circuit uses, As a wire tracer I love it! this takes a little more time to learn but as a control tech finding 1 wire out of hundreds makes life a lot easier. I haven't got the tracing part down yet, I am sure it works as good as the other I just haven't learned it.

If you’ve used another good wire tracer, like Ideal SureTrace, this exceeds that tracer. It has a very good well built weatherproof case, it has a very simple and easy of use. It has far superior frequency channels over the SureTrace, virtually no cross talk while using a hot and a neutral. Romex bundled with other homeruns back to the panel, there is some bleed over but will not give a definite “this is it” like the SureTrace will, you have to cross check with upping and lowering the power level to pinpoint wire and breaker. Overall I’m very happy with it.

Would not function as advertised

It’s highly recommended tool. No more guessing which plug in house is which wire at breaker. Great valve for wut it does.

This tool is pricey, but I justified the purchase in that I likely wouldn't need to call in an electrician. I had a dead circuit that effected a number of outlets. The tool allowed me to trace the entire circuit, where upon I discovered a GFCI outlet that I wasn't even aware of and found a nick in the hot wire in the last outlet box on the circuit. (The nick in the hot wire was shorting on the ground wire.) I was able to trace the wire along its entire path. Problem solved and now looking to troubleshoot some outdoor lights.

THIS THING HAS A LEARNING CURVE. NOT A TOOL YOU WOULD JUST THROW IN THE TRUCK AND EXPECT YOUR CREW TO SAVE SOME TIME ON THE JOB. JUST LIKE ANY TEST EQUIPMENT YOU MUST KNOW HOW TO USE IT FIRST. THE QUICK START GUIDE IS A GREAT HELP. JUST PRINT IT OUT AND THROW IN THE CASE. THE BUILD IS GREAT! TOUGH AND EVEN THE NEW APPRENTICE DROPPING IT OFF THE LADDER WONT HURT IT BUT THEY MIGHT LOSE SOME OF THE TEST CABLES. IT WAS NOT VERY FUN AT FIRST BUT AFTER WORKING WITH IT A WHILE IM STARTING TO LIKE IT. I HAVE SOME OF THE OLD BREAKER LOCATERS WHERE I HAVE TRIED TO MAKE WORK BUT DIDN'T GET ANYWHERE BESIDES MAKING THE JOB LAST LONGER. THIS ONE I DIDN'T HAVE ANY PROBLEMS LOCATING, IT JUST WORKED. THE WIRE TRACER IS KINDA TOUCHY BUT ALSO WORKED WELL. I HAVE NOT TRIED THE SHORT CIRCUIT LOACTE OR THE OPEN CIRCUIT LOCATE BUT THATS NEXT ON MY LIST. ALL IN ALL THE THING WORKS AND THATS A LOT MORE THAN I CAN SAY FOR THE OTHER ONES I'VE BEEN THROUGH. SO FAR GOOD PRODUCT AND I WOULD RECOMMEND THIS TO SOMEBODY THAT IS WILLING TO SPEND THE TIME TO KNOW HOW TO USE IT.

Well Guys if you decided to get in to the cable tracing first you MUST BE QUALIFIED TO DO SO ! Guys you need to understand how to use a transmitter and receiver and here the comes Amprobe ! Variable strength transmitter ( amazing absolutely amazing ) and variable sensitivity receiver ! And that combination makes my work as Electrical contractor so fast and easy which so awesome ! Believed it or not I traced with helper 23 cables which are located over the house with a pin point accuracy in just 23 minutes ! Please guys read the manual . But the button line you start from very intense and strong signal and gradually reducing sensitivity at the receiver you will be amazed ! That is the goodWhat I don’t like about it . For $ 1800 and you get everything what is in the description how ever once you get you transmitter and receiver out of the case than it is the problem ! I wish magnet strap must be included in package . Extra long cable must be included in paragraph you got only 1 green .Protective sleeve for transmitter and receiver is must cause most of the time transmitter stays on the floor and receiver either in your pocket or pouch . So now I have to think how to protect itOverall !!!Pros - good and very functional .Cons - very price and the package in my opinion very limited
