Good product so far
Purchased this 2 years ago and it is still working flawlessly. It's not a heavy bulky item, and seems cheap made. Case is plastic, Approx. 6.5" x 8" but I have used this unit minimum once a week for 2 years now to charge a non-deep cycle car battery I use to start and run a trailer mounted RV generator which I use daily. The battery is usually at about 50 to 60 percent (around 12.3v to 12.4v) according to the lcd display at the end of the week. It takes around 4 to 5 hours to get it back up to 100 percent. I still have a habit of checking and feeling the battery every couple hours just to make sure it is not heating up beyond a certain point because if you have a bad cell, these smart chargers are not going to shut off unless it can get the battery to reach a certain voltage. I like it because it is small, easy to maneuver around and has enough power to charge a completely dead car battery to 100 percent within 10 to 12 hours. If you left a light on and the battery is dead, you are not going anywhere for a few hours. Hopefully you have jumper cables and a good neighbor or extra vehicle if you need to get to work yesterday. The charging electrical leads do not power up till you connect a current (battery) and push the start button and will goto off automatically if the leads are disconnected. So even when it is plugged in and the leads touch you won't pop a fuse or get sparks flying everywhere and will turn off if you kick the cord and one pops off the battery. This will probably save your vehicle computer if the positive ever pops off and suddenly touches vehicle metal.

Very good basic charger
Very nice unit. Immediately put it to use on a couple of cars around that needed to be brought back to life and it did the trick. Feels flimsy but so far is working great, and the price is right. A couple of nice features that aren't advertised well: it has an onboard meter that reads the battery and gives you an estimate of the battery charge (in percent); it also has an auto kickdown: instead of turning off after it reaches full charge, it kicks down to maintenance/trickle charging. Also it has auto safety features that keep it from turning on until after it is hooked up, so no sparking clamps. The unit is small and lightweight compared to the old metal beasties my pops had when I was growing up, but it seems to do the job very well. The only thing missing is a jumpstart mode. Doesn't seem like it would have been a huge deal to add in and would have made this thing perfect.

3/6/12 Schumacher SC-1200A/CA
I have gotten two of these chargers one back in January 2014 and the other July 2014. The one I got in January works fine and no problem. So I liked it and wanted to order another one which I did. Got the one in July and it does not work very well. It takes a long time to get from 99% to 100% and in this time period the battery heats up and smells sulfur very strong. I check the charging voltage with my meter and it is charging 16.4 volts in maintenance mode, way too many volts to be charging that is why it is boiling and heating up. I am sending this one back because I am afraid it could burn out my batteries. We hope the new one coming next week will work like the first one I got. Also it is advertised as a 12 amp, 6 amp and a 3 amp charger this is also wrong. The box even says it is all three amps, that the charger should be... but it only has a 12 amp and a 3 amp charge system. A little like false advertising to me. Also it says it on Amazons web site when you order it. Not really complaining about this but it has been in a lot of reviews and goes way back and nothing has been done about it. I checked Schumacher web site and for the same charger it say the same advertisement with 3 different amp charging rates. You be the Judge..........I got my new charger from the return one and this new one run just like the one I got in January 2014. Works like a champ. Found out about the 3 different amp charge settings... it finds and adjust to the three settings on the advertising. if it is charging on 3 amp it will use from 1 to 3 amp what ever the processer think is best for the battery condition. When it is on 12 amp it is using from 6 amp to 12 amp automatic with the processer to what ever it think the batter needs. Like if it is 90% charged and you put it on to 12 amp charge the processer might decide to only use 6 amp or 8amp to charge a battery in real good shape... So it does not necessary use 12 amp charge when set to 12 amp charge it could use from 6 amp to 12 amp on the information from the processor.. This is what a tech from Schumacher told me it is a new update on this charger... I love this charger and now have two that run like a champ and sent back one.. that is why I rated it a 4 * I would of gave it a 5 if I did not have trouble with the second one and had to send it back. Only a little set back for me....

Best choice
With sturdy construction and easily understandable directions, this was my best Amazon buy ever. It’s not totally noise free, but neither is it annoying. This unit is lightweight, portable, and easily carried or stored in even the smallest of trunks. I’m considering buying a few more for Christmas gifts for loved ones whose cars I’d not want stranded by weak or dead batteries. The plug is standard for any outlet. I can leave this plugged in and use it during very hot or very cold weather, and in rain, sleet, snow - you name it. The charge is effected safely and quickly, bringing batteries back from even the lowest of charge levels. Once finished charging, this unit maintains the full charge even if the vehicle is unused for months. It automatically adjusts how much electricity is sent from any outlet to your battery, reducing the electricity when your battery is charged. How much electricity is flowing from an outlet to your battery? The unit sends enough electricity to quickly and fully charge your battery. Then, it allows just a trickle of electricity to flow to your battery, so your full charge is maintained. That means you’re not overpaying for electricity, even if you plug it into an outlet and forget it. It won’t hurt batteries by overcharging, even if attached and plugged in every day of every month. It does not get hot. It does not need attention or servicing. I can hook it up, plug it into any outlet, and leave it without worrying about anything. It’s safe and effective inside a garage, parking lot, driveway, or for on street use. An extension cord can be used if the cord provided is not long enough, but the accompanying cord seems sufficient for most uses. Summarizing, all batteries lose charges over time. This unit safely and dependably charges weak batteries, then maintains batteries by constantly sending a small trickle of electricity to make up for those anticipated and usual lost charges.

Really does the job
I purchased this when my wife's Lexus had a dead battery (replaced just a few months earlier). I knew the battery was probably still good, but she had not driven the car for 2-3 weeks due to illness. I bought this on Amazon, got it in two days with my Prime membership. Easy directions, plugged unit in, hooked up cables to battery, and it analyzed battery and began a long charging cycle. Left it on overnight, as it kept reading percentage charge going up. In morning, it read 100%, unhooked cables, and turned off unit. The car started instantly, and all the accessories operated normally. Just had to reprogram her radio stations in the audio system. I would recommend this to anyone who needs to occasionally recharge a battery that has been unused for too long. I did not need an instant start expensive unit, so if you need to start a dead battery instantly this is not for you. But for my purposes, or to keep a battery used infrequently (off-road motorcycle, boat battery, etc.) on trickle charge, this will work perfectly for you. Easy to use!

Works just fine for me
I don't really care about the special features of this charger, just that it can charge quickly and simply and can maintain a charge over time if needed. I received it this morning and immediately used it on the two vehicles that seldom get used... an old saturn and my old F250 that I use around the home area for branches and trash, occasionally if I need to carry something large home from a nearby town. the saturn charged in less than an hour and the truck took about 4 hours. My only negative thoughts are that it's made to look much bigger than it actually is because the upper half is used for cord storage, which actually is a very good thing, since I've lost cables or had them damaged on older chargers. The other very slight misgiving is that it does not remember my settings when I unplug it, so startup consists of pushing 3 button switches each time I use it... not a big deal really. A little over priced but I'm happy with it.

Will charge a dead battery - and will not overcharge a good one
light weight and fool proof. Some people complained it will not charge a totaly dead battery. This is safety feature so it will not turn on if nothing is hooked up it. To charge a dead battery - you have to give it a little pre charge to get it to about 1 volt so the charger knows something is actually hooked up to to it. To do this: 1. unplug charger from wall 2. hook battery to charger 3. press and hold "display" and "type" button at the same time 4. while holding those buttons - plug the charger into wall. * this will bypass safety features and charge the battery even if it is dead (assuming the battery can be charged at all) - do not run in this mode for more then 5 minutes or you can damage unit and battery. - this will get the battery enough of a charge so that the charger can detect a battery is hooked up to it (1 volt) . 5. unplug charger from wall. 6. wait 30 seconds and plug in charger into the wall. This will put it back into 'regular' mode and start charging your batter properly Good luck! Brad

I am disappointed with this charger
I am disappointed with this charger. I bought it because I thought it would be better than my analog meter Harbor Freight charger. I read the negative reviews but dismissed them as anomalies. I thought a microprocessor driven charger along with the digital meter would be great. Today I emailed Schumacher to ask about the complaints I've read about the 16 volt output. They responded back that 16 volts is pulsating volts when it is in the de-sulfating mode. Normally it kicks out 15.5 volts. I thought 15.5 was still too high but I gave it a try anyway. My battery was showing 12.4 volts. I turned on the headlights and cranked the radio for a few minutes to get rid of any surface charge. I then waited for 30 minutes before charging. The fan never turned on (it is supposed to stay on). The display kept turning off and I had to press a button to get it back on. When the display showed, it alternated between charge % and voltage. The voltage showed 12 and never changed. At around 80+%, the battery sounded like it was boiling and electrolyte fluid starting leaking from the fill caps. I unplugged it and waited and then restarted. It was still around 80% and the battery started making the boiling noise again and leaked water. I gave up and plugged in my Harbor Freight charger. The charge full indicator light lit up and the meter's needle went to 100%. So when the Schumacher showed a little over 80%, the Harbor Freight showed 100%. Maybe I got a defective Schumacher charger. I just emailed them about what happened and I might end up returning it. Update 8/2/2014 I sent TWO emails to Schumacher to ask about what happened and to find out if the unit was defective. I received an auto reply that someone would contact me within 24 hours. NO ONE REPLIED BACK. I did lots of research online and found that some sites say that 15.5 volt charging is not unusual and boiling is normal at this voltage. Fluid leakage could be due to overfilling water. Just have to be sure to refill to the proper level after charging. One reviewer stated that the tech help said the fan turns on only when the unit gets hot. Yet Schumacher's site says it is supposed to stay on. Mine never turned on even when the charger got very hot. I'm returning the charger today and have requested a replacement. If only Schumacher RESPONDED to my questions could I determine if my charger is possibly not defective. POOR CUSTOMER SERVICE. Update 8/9/2014 I received the replacement Schumacher charger. This one's fan WORKS! It turns on occasionally and off. Another reviewer said that customer service told him that it turns on when necessary. My first one never turned on. I returned my Harbor Freight charger because my battery was at 12.4 volts after it was fully charged. This Schumacher charged mine to 12.7 (after the higher surface charge had dissipated). My battery sounded like it boiled again and some water leaked out of the vent caps again but it charged to 100%. The display turns off after a minute or so (I found out in the manual) and you have to click a button to revive the display. I received a total of THREE emails from Schumacher that they received my emails and that someone would contact me within 24 hours. Yes, THREE EMAILS... yet no one contacted me! If they had only contacted me then maybe I would have found out that the original Schumacher charger was defective or not.

Great portable charger for RV's.
This is a great small portable charger for RV batteries and automotive batteries. Its nice to see the charge level and voltage of the batteries, this unit does what I need and recommend it to anyone who needs a battery charger for automotive and RV batteries. So far it's been great.

What kind of Smart Chrger doesn't show the amperage
Model SC1360. I charge batteries a lot, I have an AGM and a lead acid for my boat and 2 x 6 vots for the RV and numerous other batteries. I am out fishing and RVing about 90 days a year so a good charger is a must. I can't tell how this thing is performing because the display doesn't give you the Amperage. Just the voltage and % full. That's useless to me. I need to be able to see when and how long it's charging at 15 amps and whether it's cycling through the stages appropriately to guage whether it's a good charger. For all I know, right now it's charging at 3 amps... Or maybe 15? Wtf. Oh and by the way, look at my picture, the voltage just says 12. Not like 12.0 or 12.1, just 12. I just unplugged and check out, now showing 3% when a second ago its was 67%. This is getting returned right now. Don't waste your money.
