Do you need to soak this before using?

Absolutely. Always soak reed before you use it. Round reed needs more time than flat. The larger the reed, the longer it should be soaked. But I less you are using the larger sizes, wet for a half minute for flat reed or 2 minutes for round. You can tell when it gets flexible.

I have not had success staining it.

Is the wicker treated with any chemicals?

It is not treated or anything. It is raw natural material. It can be stained or painted or treated for outdoor use or what ever you would like. Thanks, Furniture Knowledge d o t c o m

Is this material untreated? My bird enjoys playing with wicker toys and I’d like to make him some.
