Kotobuki Japanese Rice Washer with Dual Drain, Clear

This is a colander-style rice washing bowl. It's thinner plastic than a colander, because rice is light weight and all you are doing is running water through it and scrubbing the rice a bit. This removes the glucose and starch coating that is put on rice to improve its appearance and keep it from sticking in the bag during storage. Rice used to be coated with talc, a carcinogen due to asbestos in the talc mineral, but this practice has been stopped, for the most part, except in some South American markets. However, washing the rice still removes any dirt and coating and ensures the rice boils up properly. So this sieve or colander is used specifically for that purpose. You can use it as a colander, but it's not really meant for hot water (draining pasta) or rough use, so other than occasionally washing some vegetables in it, I use it exclusively for rice. There are holes in the bottom, but fine enough mesh to keep the rice from falling out, and there are slits on the side to allow you to swirl the water and drain it from sides while you rinse. It works well. There is a red eyelet on the handle tab to allow you to hang it on a pegboard, if that's your style of storage.

got this with my new zoji cooker, works very well. cleaning rice has to be done quickly and this drains from bottom and with a tip it empties, letting you start again quickly. feels sturdy and there's a hook hole if you need to hang it. get this, well worth the 7 smackeroos.

I can't say a whole lot about this item. It's basically a strainer but is made especially for prewashing the starch off the rice. It works. The rice does not fall through the holes, and the strainer is slow to drain to allow more time for contact with the water. The strainer system built into the spout is nice as it drains even more water off. I'm sure I'll find other uses for this strainer than just rice. It is pretty solid for plastic, and I expect it will last a long time with normal handling. I'm glad I bought it as washing the starch off is important to my diabetic diet.

I purchased this to avoid wearing the coating off my Zojirushi rice cooker bowl It does a nice job of facilitating thorough washing of rice, and I am happy I purchased it, but it is not absolutely necessary to clean rice. That said, it is well-designed and effective.

I find that grains of rice always get stuck in the holes of the colander where the water drains, both at the bottom and on the side. I've used the colander with different types of rice and it happens all the time. I don't know if this is happens with all colanders, but I find it very inconvenient. It seems to me it shouldn't happen if the colander is designed clean rice.

El tazón ó bowl perfecto para el lavado de arroz, fácil de limpiar aunque también es ideal para lavar y enjuagar frutas y verduras ó colar la pasta. Esta hecho en Japón con excelente material PVC resistente en color traslucido cuenta con drenaje o escurrimiento dual (fondo y lateral) en el fondo cuenta con la cantidad suficiente de orificios exactos para que el arroz no se desperdicie al estar lavando, en uno de sus laterales que termina en punta hay un colador o drenaje más amplio aunque las rendijas son exactas ya que no se va el arroz al momento de estar drenando el agua, en la base del tazón tiene 4 patas que le dan mayor soporte y firmeza en la superficie donde lo coloques, como plus tiene orificio color rojo para colgar. Sin duda un artículo indispensable en cada cocina, compra acertada, lo pedí hace varios días en todo momento me indicaron que el artículo no estaba disponible en almacén dando una fecha estimada la cual fue antes de la misma llego 21 días posterior al pedido en perfecto estado y diría que el envío fue muy pronto por lo ocurrido recientemente tras el terremoto que sufrió la CDMX, el costo espectacular y con membresía prime sin cargo extra por el envío. Adicional y como recomendación es muy importante lavar o enjuagar el arroz antes de cocinarlo, dado que los estudios indican que puede reducir el contenido de arsénico, liberando así el exceso de almidón y posibles impurezas que pueda contener: piedrecillas, polvo, cáscaras sueltas y en general pequeñas partículas. Se debe de repetir el proceso varias veces hasta que salga el agua clara. Si dejamos remojar el arroz antes de cocerlo, estamos ayudando a que sea más digerible y que se liberen enzimas importantes, que le permitirán aumentar la disponibilidad de sus nutrientes, al inducir, con la humedad del agua, a que el grano arranque el proceso de germinación. Por eso adquirí este tazón (bowl) que sé que más que un gasto es una magnifica inversión y que facilita increíblemente este proceso de lavado.
