Excellent Knife! Best I've ever Found!
I received this knife a year ago in a set of Chef's knives to review as part of the Vine program and have received numerous compliments on it over the past year from visitors who joined me in cooking during their visit. My mother-in-law in particular exclaimed that it was a wonderful knife and that she would love one, should I remember to whisper that information to whoever picked her name in our family Christmas gift drawing. Well, of course I could not forget that, as she is rarely so impressed with anything and isn't it nice to known exactly what someone wants. Luckily I was the one who drew her name this year so no conspiracy was required on my part! I was so very pleased when this arrived and I observed that it was indeed the same wonderful knife that came in the set I received: beautiful Damascus steel, perfect balance and weight, sharp enough to cut paper. It came in a lovely box, sturdy enough for storage, pretty enough to give without wrapping. It also included a nice sheaf for storage. Over a year after having received my first one of these knives, this is still my favorite knife, and I am very happy to report that the rest of my family is also very happy to be receiving it as a gift. I could not recommend this more highly.

High quality sharp beautiful knife
This knife is very sharp and high quality. Big upgrade from my previous knife. Cuts through onions like they’re nothing. Cuts through tomatoes without getting juice everywhere.

Very Sharp
This is a great chief knife at a great price. The quality is very solid and the knife is extremely sharp. The design and markings on the knife makes it look absolutely beautiful. The knife is easy to handle and grips well for safety. A must have in the kitchen and doesn't break the bank.

Watch your fingers…
I bought a set of seven of these and I am enjoying the heck out of them; most luxurious kitchen knives I’ve ever owned. Coming from Spanish Henkels that were just meh. The Kyoku Shoguns are weighty, quite stout in the hand. The weight is a common complaint I am reading about these, however I love the heft of these. It screams quality construction. I suppose one possible downside is the handles get very slick when they are wet and dropping it could damage your floors (mine are made of wood), or worse yet your foot. But I nitpick…The Damascus in the steel is very light in appearance and subtle, but quite beautiful and tasteful. The handle design is superb in my opinion and fit my largish hands perfectly. These babies are ultra sharp out of the box. I suggest spending a few more bucks on a higher end cutting board and the VG10 blades should last quite a while without the need to resharpen. My touch up system is an oval diamond rod, but I haven’t needed to use it as of yet. When on sale, these knives are a sensational value. I don’t think you can go wrong with the Shoguns unless you enjoy lightweight cutting tools. These don’t fit that bill.

Feels good in hand.
Bought as a gift for my brother. Had nice weight to it and seemed like it was solidly built. I am questioning weather it was Damascus at all or the design was etched on. Feels good in the hand though and seems to hold an edge pretty good.

Great Knife
I love this knife. I bought one for my mom who is Japanese and was amazed. So at Christmas, I bought one for everyone that I needed to get a gift for (including myself, 😁). All well received.

Excellent chef's knife
Razor sharp out of the box. Now it's the knife everybody wants to use! We have a number of other knives from this company (nakiri, vegetable cleaver, 6" knife, paring knife). All but the paring knife are used constantly. I keep them "reasonably" sharp with a few strokes on a strop before every use. They can go for several months without sharpening, a statement I'm sure some purists would scoff at. A high quality Japanese water stone >=5000 grit is essential for sharpening. This chef's knife has nice clearance between the handle and the edge of the blade, making chopping easy. It excels at mincing fresh herbs. Its usage in our household is similar to the nakiri, as an all purpose vegetable chopper slicer, but it is better suited to slicing large cuts of meat than the nakiri. I would suggest the chef's knife as a good start to a set, followed by the 6" knife for cutting open bell-peppers, small fruit, button mushrooms, etc. I still prefer the nakiri for slicing long vegetables such as eggplants and summer squash - and of course, filleting fish. The vegetable cleaver greatly eases the job of handling tough root vegetables, pineapples and other large fruit, but doesn't get much use outside of that.
