With my limited knowledge (I used the light one once) I would say go with medium or dark and not the light. The best thing to do is to experiment. I was redoing two bathrooms that had the exact same vanities. In one case I was completely replacing one of the vanities so I could experiment with it. I painted the light wood retique it and then bought about four different stains from Lowes (the little Minwax cans that are about $4 each.) and tried them to see which look I liked the best. I know this is tougher in you case, but if you can find anything that is similar to your door experiment on that. By the way, I am not good with creative things and redecorating at all so I thought for sure I was going to ruin he vanity and just have to paint over the whole thing, but it came out quite nice and that was a surprise for me. **Q: How much polyacrylic is needed for a dresser & 2 end tables & how many coats?** A: Quart 1-2 coats depending on amount of use. High traffic 2 coat minimum **Q: I have a dark cabinet and I would like to make it a weathered gray. Will this do this or will the original dark stain come through?** A: I would get the light wood and also dark wood and graining tools. Ultimately, the color is going to be the color of stain. Quality counts. **Q: I painted my laundry room cabinets with the snow color. Now do I put the wax over the cabinets or the polyacrylic over the paint?** A: Wax will always be your last step. Poly over paint and for added protection, wax over poly.
