It has a light leather or microfiber covering with a very slight bit of cushioning. For me, I find it only a touch hard on my seat, but it is shaped so well that I can sit in the saddle or on the nose and be very comfortable, obviously when in padded shorts. I have had some expensive seats and in many ways, this is just as good for about 1/6 th the cost, actually, having been out on a long ride yesterday, this is better then those other name brand top of the line seats I had.
