what a story! and the illustrated edition is a gorgeous object
I'm reviewing the large-format illustrated hardcover edition of this book, which I read and adored when it first came out, years ago. The photographs, drawings, collages, and handwritten pages that have been chosen for this edition are mostlynew to me, despite the fact that I have been following Patti Smith's life arc and work ever since 1976. This book is a gorgeous object to have and to hold in the lap. I fell into it like jumping into a familiar swimming pool, then read it and loved it in new and enthralling ways. So fascinating to observe the early 1970s from the point of view of an intelligent well-read young person who was never a hippie nor drawn to the counter-culture! Once again, when I read the ending, where Patti relates her last words with Robert Mapplethorpe, I burst into tears.Illuminating, inspiring, educational, deeply moving, and written with the skill of a true storyteller—what more can you desire? Plus lots of great pictures!

It’s a true story
It took me back to the 60’s-70’s atmosphere in NYC. It was beautifully written ! A very touching story.

An intimate look into the mind and life of an amazing woman
I have been a fan and follower of Patti Smith since I listened to "Horses" and had her music and poetry seared into my brain for the first time. I have always considered her to be the penultimate poet of Punk and Rock and Roll, and now see she is an amazing prose artist as well. Her intimate and unpretentious telling of hers and Robert Mappelthorpe's life together, their struggles, their thought processes, their amazing collaborations and the evolution of their love for one another gives us a glimpse into the life of one of the true geniuses of American music and art.

Inspiration.
I didn't know Patti Smith's work before I read this (of course, I'd heard some of her music, though didn't own any recordings, and hadn't read any of her writing...) - I am now a Patti Smith fan. She is a wonderful writer, and her beautiful retelling of her life was inspirational to me. I would recommend this fantastic book to anyone who values art, living life as poetry, and the power of love. She is someone I would love to meet one day.

Une seule chose à regretter le livre était très abîmé à l’ouverture du colis . Un produit de remplacement a été proposé et reçu très rapidement. Merci !

Beautiful book - arrived damaged
I received this book in what looks like used condition-the corners are crushed and the blue dye has been rubbed off the corners. Even a section of the pages are wavy and strange. Super disappointed to pay full price and get a damaged product.
