Bandai Tamashii Nations Gx-74 Mazinger Z TV Version Soul of Chogokin Action Figure

Clean, Well Designed Figure
GX-74 getter 1 DC was released in July of 2017 at price of 15,120JPY which translates to roughly $142 U.S. I purchased it on Amazon for $103.45 and the current price on Amazon, as I write this review, is $94.In terms of overall design, Getter Robo is a near carbon copy of Bandai’s GX-70 and GX-73 Mazinger Z. Obviously there are cosmetic differences all over the place but the handling of the articulation is exactly the same. As far as I can tell, none of the parts are actually repurposed as everything is slightly different in sizing from Mazinger so I don’t think this was a matter of laziness. It’s just a case of not reinventing the wheel. The main differences in design include an attachable chest plate and cape. There is also a small circular area that can be turned around to represent his abdomen beam. There are a whole lot of design differences for Getter 1 depending on which cartoon you’re watching but this one was taken from ‘Great Mazinger vs. Getter Robo’, released in Japan in 1975. It was a 30-minute television show that does not appear to have ever been released in the United States and I certainly have never seen it. Based on images I found online it does look like this is an accurate interpretation of Getter 1 although they colored him light blue instead of white. Most incarnations of Getter Robo 1 are quite a bit thicker around the midsection but the 1975 version seems like one of the leaner ones with a general body shape similar enough to Mazinger that Bandai could reuse the design. You have to attach Getter Robo’s cape and chestplate and they go on very easily. Mind you, this is an adult figure meant for posing. If you were to play with the figure the cape and chestplate would definitely pop off but in a posed state they remain firmly attached. My biggest concern with Getter Robo and my Mazinger figures is that if they were to topple over their own heavy weight might snap some of the plastic including the cape or head. Speaking of plastic, I’m happy to report there isn’t a whole lot on this figure. As far as I can tell the plastic is limited to the hands, head, cape/chestplate and internal joints. I’m not sure why the joints are plastic. The Metal Build Mazinger is the opposite with metal joints and metal guts covered in plastic. The metal joints are a bit stiffer which may explain why they went with plastic. It also might be just a matter of cost. The only minor issue with articulation is in the shoulder which can get a little caught up with Getter’s chestplate/cape attackment. Note, the cape is ridged plastic. As with the Bandai Mazinger figures the hip articulation is nearly nil due to Getter metal briefs but the front plate can be replaced with another piece that allows much greater movement at the cost of seeing the inner workings of his joints. This is definitely an adult figure. There are sharp points on the head and plastic that can easily break. I would never let a child play with this even if you had so much money that you didn’t care about it breaking. I love the simplicity of the design and the high quality construction. It looks fantastic sitting on a shelf and I won’t hesitate to give it top marks.

A very well executed old school style figure
Baindai’s Soul of Chogokin GX-74 DC is the 74th entry in their high end Die Cast “super robot” series. For this one they go back truly old school. The original Getter 1 as he appeared in the earliest Manga and Anime. Long before he became the pot bellied super robot, Getters first form was a sleek lanky frame. And Bandai’s DC offering captures it perfectly. The first thing you notice after unboxing is the figures weight. The feet, calves, thighs, chest, biceps and forearms are all solid weighty perfectly painted diecast. The hip joints inside the changeable yellow plastic underpants are metal as well. The second thing you notice is the perfect finish. It seems the entire figure is painted and it looks good. The white isn’t pure white. Rather it has just a hint of actinic blue. To make it stand out. The red striping is perfect. The red cape is two tone, bright red outer, dark red inner. Same with feet. Bright red dark red soles. Everything is crisp. Everything visually pops.Articulation is... more or less ok. By the standards of a modern robot it is meh. But as an old school style robot it is decent. It won’t hit an iron man pose, but you can get some action poses out of it. It great but serviceable.Accessories are an interesting mix. It has two classic style Getter Tomahawks with matching hands. Two open hands. Two grasping Hands. 2chest plates and 2 face plates for either anime or manga versions. The coolest are the three Getter Machines. Three flying ships that combine to magically form Getter 1 2 and 3. They are nice 2” models. They have a clear y shaped display stand that simulates all three launching. Getter 1 comes with a really nice stand, that stores most of the option parts inside. The extra hands, faces and option parts come already stored in the base. The figure stands about 7”. A gorgeous display and collector piece.

Best anime-accurate Getter 1 Toy
This is an awesome chogokin release. It is closer to the 70's anime than the previous release GX-06. Plus this feels more of a "toy" than GX-06: lots of articulation, different pieces for customization and high posability. The downside, you will want Bandai to release Getter 2 and 3 too.

Buon Getter 1

Bellissimo pezzo
