The Old and New Testaments and Historical and Chronological Index have been beautifully retypeset, faithfully to reproduce the original 1899 Gibbons edition. The text is set in the classic Century Expanded font, which was originally used in the 1899 edition, and has been lovingly typed line by line to represent exactly the original edition. The Family Register pages have also been digitally typeset and redrawn. The text is set in CenturyExpandedBT font, size 8.5pt. Maps - from the 1911 edition published by Wm. Aleiter Co., Catholic Supply House, Indianapolis. Imprimatur: John Cardinal Farley, Archbishop of New York. Eleven coloured maps digitally redrawn by hand and fully coloured. Engravings - from the 1941 edition published by The Douay Bible House, New York. Imprimatur: Francis J. Spellman, D.D., Archbishop of New York. These thirty-two beautiful engravings recreate key moments in Biblical History. In our edition, they have been scanned, carefully remastered and enhanced, and their captions have been retypeset and corrected to match the appropriate verses in the Bible text. In 1546, the Council of Trent declared the Latin Vulgate Bible as authentic, and declared that "No one (may) dare or presume under any pretext whatsoever to reject it" (4th Session, April 8, 1546). The Douay-Rheims Bible is an English translation of the Latin Vulgate Bible, a version universally used in the Church for over 1500 years, itself meticulously translated from the original Hebrew and Greek by St. Jerome (A.D. 340-420). The Douay-Rheims was completed in 1609, and is therefore older than the King James Version, the oldest Protestant translation still in use, which was published in 1611. The Rheims New Testament was published nearly thirty years earlier, in 1582. Further, the translators of the KJV make specific reference to the Douay version in their translators' preface. It is commonly acknowledged that, in preparing the KJV, the translators made use of the Rheims New Testament and adopted many of its readings in preference to those of other English editions. Since it was translated quite literally and with great reverence for each individual word from the Vulgate, which in turn reflects the structure of the original languages very clearly, the Douay-Rheims Bible can give great insight into the minds of the sacred authors. In 1749-1752, Bishop Challoner, knowing that many English Catholics were reading distorted Protestant versions of the Bible such as the King James Version (KJV), made major revisions to the Douay-Rheims version, to improve its readability without diminishing its accuracy. The notes, written by Bishop Challoner are entirely faithful to the teachings of the Holy Catholic Church. The revised Douay-Rheims Bible has been approved by the Church many times over, including the approbation of Cardinal Gibbons for the 1899 edition that Baronius Press is publishing. For over 300 years, the Douay Rheims Bible was the only Catholic English translation of Scripture used. It continues to be used officially in Catholic churches today. Unfortunately, my eyesight isn't what it was a decade ago, and I realized that I needed a larger print. Hence, I purchased the personal sized volume, and I love it! With the aid of my reading specks, the print, and font type are very comfortable for my aging eyes. In addition to, The pages are thicker than those in most bibles, which makes for ease in page turning - No more sticking together like they do in some bibles printed on very thin onion paper. Finally, I very much enjoy the Papal writings located at the beginning of the volume, as well as the artistic biblicial story pitcure plates which are placed neatly in the middle of the book.

Fantastic
This is a very nice Bible. Excellent translation, good size, nice cover, thick paper, easy to read type. The only defect for me is that the ribbon markers seem a little cheesey compared to other premium Bibles.

Simply The Best
This bible is a masterpiece. It preserves a venerable translation of the original OT and NT texts that should not be lost. It may not be easy to read or politically correct by today's ever-shifting standards; but that is exactly why I love it. I don't want dumbed down language or verses rewritten so they won't be 'offensive'. I want to know as close as possible what the original texts said. This should be the gateway to the process of thinking about what was written, finding the truth in it, learning about the times in which it was written, and applying it to the present. The Bible should stimulate thinking as well as bringing the reader closer to the word of God. This translation does exactly that. The beauty and poetry of the Psalms is breathtaking. The volume itself is beautifully made with quality paper and an easily readable font.

Bible
The Bible was a bit bigger and heavier than expected. Yet the cover was puny by comparison. It was too thin flat and lacked substance. It would have been more complete had it had a quality thick cover for the price. The rest of the construction was adequate. I bought it as it's for Catholics and is an older translation therefore the translations are more literal whereas the newer versions translations are more interpretations of what the Bible sentences mean. I prefer the actual translations minus the interpretations as to what was said and the meaning. I can figure out the meaning and feel like after reading the exact translations when read have better meaning to me. However, in my most humble this bible is not for the average person who is looking for someone who will simply tell them what the words mean.

Love this Bible, very disappointed with NAB and RSV and many of our Bishops!
Love this Bible. The Catholic Church continues to bastardize the Word of God by using more and more secular language to appease those who demand "inclusive language." Genesis 5:2 used to say in the RSV and NAB, "God made male and female and called them man..." And called THEM, "MAN!" This meant the word "MAN" and "MEN" was already INCLUSIVE throughout the Bible and it was understood. Now, even Catholic Bibles change up original Latin and Greek. It's appalling and wrong because the original translation is lost. Many Muslims use this as proof the Bible is "corrupt." They lay out the hundreds of versions of Bibles and show their people how each one has different variations. Note to CATHOLIC SCHOLARS and BISHOPS! Wake the HELL UP! STOP LIVING IN A BUBBLE! TEACH THE TRUTH as JESUS DID and STOP WORRYING ABOUT BEING SO DAMN POLITICALLY CORRECT! Luke 7:28 used to say, "Among those born among women there was no greater PROPHET than John..." Both the NAB and RSV have removed the words "no greater prophet." Was the Church afraid to offend Muslims who believe Muhammad is the greatest prophet? No one can give me and answer for this. btw, if you look at the Douay Rheims Bible it says, "no greater prophet." So does the Greek!!! Check out a website that has the Greek Interliner and you'll see for yourself! The Devil is running rampant at the Vatican and destroying Catholicism from within.

The best edition of the Douay-Rheims available. This page upholds the traditional texts of Scripture as they emerged in definite form in the 4th century, and the All serious students of the arcane or Scriptures need a quality edition of the Douay-Rheims, the most prominent translation into English of the Latin Vulgate. This edition by Baronius Press fits the bill. Quality paper and a new typeset of the 1899 Baltimore edition make this Bible a pleasure to read. The notes and introductions prepared under the supervision of Bishop Challoner in the 18th century are all intact. Not a fine binding but affordable. Baronius also offers the Knox Translation of the Vulgate.
