First off, I bought this a little worried off some of the one star reviews. But I figured I’d give it a try for how cheap it is. The one star reviews say some of the following: Leaks water into pipes Rack makes A LOT of noise Rack rusts and doesn’t seal Rack is very hard to put together All of the above is wrong flat out. First off, it’s insanely easy to put together with a screwdriver and a rubber mallet. I was able to put this rack together by myself in 30 minutes. The only reason it took 30 minutes is because I didn’t read the directions at first and had to put the rubber slips on. Which leads me to, the people that said it doesn’t seal, must have failed to put it together correctly. The rubber slips seal the parts of the rods that go together, so water can’t get inside the tubes. The screws come with rubber washers, which also do the above. Now I did also seal the connections between tubes with silicone as well, because why not have extra protection. The rack does make some noise, but it’s not so loud you can’t have a conversation. If you think strapping a rack to your roof, that catches the wind won’t make any noise, you have a lot more issues with yourself than this rack. People saying their rack flew off literally didnt tighten the rack down correctly. I placed the rack on my Subaru crosstrek, and hand tightened all the nuts. Came back the next day, and then winched down the nuts with channel locks after the threads of the bolts and nuts relaxed and loosened up, as all threads do. After a 1200 mile trip, with rain and snow in some areas, the rack is still one with the car. I can grab it and literally try to move it and the car just moves instead. As for water, I broke the silicone seals when I get home and took it apart just to see, and the internals are bone dry. No water at all even through moderate rain storms driving 80 mph. Another review mentioned bolts being so long they scratched the tip of the car. First off if the bolts scratched the top, you put the bolts on upside down. Watch the YouTube video or read the directions, the bolts face upward away from your car. That being said they are long for my roof rack cross bars. But remember this is a universal roof rack basket, it has to accommodate very thick cross bars also. If the length bothers you, simply go to Home Depot and buy shorter bolts for $2. Or angle grind off the excess as I did. That being said, you have to keep in mind this is a rack that’s less than $100. It’s going to be a $100 rack. That doesn’t mean it’s junk, just simply don’t compare it to a $400 Thule, because it’s not a $400 Thule. It’s a very strong roof rack for under $100. And it does everything that you will use it for, just so long as you don’t try and overload it past it’s weight rating. To sum it all up, for less than $100, this rack is amazing. It’s strong, extremely light, super easy to put together, and with a little extra silicone and time very easy to seal up for poor weather. Remember, hand tighten nuts, wait a day for the threads to settle, then Chanel lock them down. Buy this rack, and enjoy your cars MPG, while still having great cargo space.

Did the job just find this summer on my Toyota RAV4. Only question will be is in a year or two from now with the Chinese plastic be all cracked and brittle as they tend to use the cheapest stuff possible so, if it does get unusable, I will follow up with this review.

This thing is a different price every time I look at it. I think I've seen it from about $76 up to $101, where it is as of this writing. After reading the reviews and knowing that I would need to seal and coat one of these racks (and any rack) myself, I hit the used section and found one that was described as having "major cosmetic flaws or damage." That was perfect for a rack I'm going to refinish anyway! It was $57. It arrived quickly and was well packed. Guys...it had minor, superficial scuffs. Much less than you would get after the first time using it for *anything* and I guess someone returned it for that. Score for me! It looked just fine, but rust prevention is the issue, so to coat or not to coat was not the question. As many have said, the drilled holes do not line up well, but the screws are also abysmal little things that only go through one side anyway. I'm not going down the highway like that! I drilled larger holes in all 8 locations in the main assembly (I left the fairing screws alone, just sealed them) and got larger bolts, that go through both sides, locking washers and nylocks, hit the holes with flex seal and bolted it up. NOW, I trusted it. I would not be comfortable using only the included screws at all. I went over the welds and they were actually mostly ok. I hit any iffy ones with flex seal and definitely did the same for the joints (I didn't bother with the bound-to-fail covers for the joints...heavy coats of flex here) and then gave the whole rack, minus the fairing, a couple coats of truck bed liner spray. I left the fairing with it's gloss finish alone, only sealing the holes and screws, since the wind resistance would be more minimized. I'm probably going to fine sand and give it one more shot of liner in a few days. Mine came with a printed logo, not the sticker. I thought about covering it and putting a Subaru decal over it, but, you know what? The Maxxhaul one looks good and I'm not trying to pass it off as another brand or anything. I may keep it like this. Digging it so far. The mounting hardware was fine and works well. I doubt you would want to use this out of the box as is, but, throw a trip to the hardware store (yay!), a few minutes of power tools (yay!) and a little sealant and spray liner (yay!), and you have yourself a nice rack, and had as much fun as a nice rack should be, to those who appreciate such things. I made out like a bandit on this thing and I like it! Oh, and the wind noise is wayyyy less than I expected. I have to imagine that I can even hear anything at all. I can't feel any drag and haven't had my MPG go down, which actually surprises me. I did mount it as far back as I could, so as not to block my panoramic sunroof, so maybe that helps. If its over $100, I guess you are approaching Rola territory, as well as some others, and there are some extendable ones around that point, so at $80ish or below, this is a no brainer. At the $57 I paid; a steal. I wanted a smallish rack that would be strong enough to trust and, after throwing a few bucks and minutes at it, that's what I have! And the "work" I did with this one, I would do on any rack, even much more expensive ones. It was a great value and I am psyched about having it on my Forester! It can carry some of my training gear (important for us personal trainers in the apocalypse) and camping stuff when we head out. If you are wanting to use it as it comes out of the box...I can't say, but I'd surprised if that worked well. If you want to spend a few minutes making it road/weather-worthy, this rack should work great for you! I'm really glad I bought it. UPDATE: With the weatherproofing I outlined above, this thing has been through numerous rain storms and ZERO rust. You need to do that and it's perfect. Same for my LED lights. People complain that they get moisture and fail. Gotta seal all of this stuff. I don't trust any manufacturer to weatherproof. This thing is great as it is now!

I have had this rack for over three years now and used it heavily. It attaches easily and the profile and design is nice. After three years in a hot climate, the paint wore thin, but this morning spray painted it with flat outdoor spray paint and it looks good as new. I love this rack and a great deal!

5 stars to offset the 1 star reviews. This rack is worth every penny. Pros: It's easy to assemble It's affordable It's sturdy and well made It's sleek without looking "space shipish", I appreciate it's lower profile Cons: it's heavier than expected, but that speaks to how well it's made. It was incredibly simple to assemble. Several reviews mentioned water getting in the tubes and screws being too short, so I sealed the tube unions with butyl rubber tape (for sealing metal roofs) and the screws I used the butyl tape instead of the washers. Even then with the rubber sleeves installed I don't see water being an issue... Rust? It's has pretty thick powder coat, I don't expect that to be an issue...and if it is...big deal, it's a $100 rack. If it rusts I'll take it off, clean it up and coat it in truck bed liner U bolts were a bit long, but were easy to cut flush with the finger nuts used to secure it. As for excessive wind noise...all racks are going to cause noise, but frankly I didn't really notice anything extra. Very happy with it

As I was I reviewing this cargo carrier I found a review from July 2020 where the reviewer noted that the screws that hold the unit together were very small so as to render the carrier to be, in his opinion, unsafe. After receiving the carrier and inspecting the hardware, I agree. The attached photo note the screws and washers that were supplied to secure the three rack components together. When used as directed the gripping power of the screws was about a 1/4” which is basically nothing! I totally agree, not nearly good enough! So…….I really liked everything else about the carrier so I decided to use my own hardware to assemble the unit very similar to how the earlier reviewer did it. For $5 worth of hardware and say an hour of your time you can make this carrier much safer! Here is what you need: * A 3/16 drill bit * Four (4) 1 1/4” size 10/24 bolts * Four (4) 1” size 10/24 bolts * Eight (8) size 10/24 nylon lock nuts * Sixteen (16) size 10 flat washers * Lube……I used Vaseline It’s important to use “stainless” hardware! I assembled the unit and added a few of the screws thar came with it to help hold it together and to keep all of the holes aligned. From there I drilled all of the holes “completely” thru with the 3/16 bit. Next I took it apart and slide on the rubber protective gaskets as directed. I then reassembled the unit again but this time put a few of the new bolts in place to help keep it together and to keep the holes aligned. The rubber gaskets are a very tight fit so I knew that there was no way they were going to slide over and protect my new hardware. So, rather than not use them, I slide the gaskets in place, felt for the holes in the carrier, and drilled thru the gaskets. I did this until all eight holes were re-drilled. And while it may look like the bolts are too short when you go to assemble with the new hardware……with a bit of pressure all of the bolts worked perfect. See photos. Once everything was in place and tightened up it was rock solid. And speaking of rock solid the hardware for mounting the carrier to my car roof rack worked great! I think the mfger should consider a hardware upgrade!

I read the other reviews first and concur with almost all that was mentioned. For the price, this is a great rack. First thing I did was cover all welds with black silicone. Next I put on a few coats of flat black chassis coat rubberized spray on. Next I assembled - and was ready thanks to other reviewers - two holes did not line up properly, so I drilled and finished connecting (of note, I put locktite on each screw prior to installing). Next up, I slid the sleeves over and sealed each sleeve with black silicone to ensure water stays out. I then removed the factory decal, which was already peeling (used adhesive remover- cane right off). I then removed the front plate, rubberized front rails, then cleaned the plate area with alcohol and sprayed the front plate). I let all dry for around 16 hours, then reinstalled front plate and put black silicone over those screws. I then sprayed over the screws and silicone with rubberized spray. Let’s that fray a few hours, then put the rack on the vehicle. All in, 1.5 cans of spray was used (I was generous when painting). Factor in the cost of paint and silicone added around $30 and at this price point, it is an incredible deal (you would most likely need to do to any rack purchased (i have had to do to others I’ve had on other vehicles, and those were nearly 5 times this price). I plan to add a decal at some point (weighing my options). Installing on vehicle was straightforward and simple. I used a lot of strength pulling on rack and also drove with a cooler on roof as a test run - seems very stable. Is all of the aforementioned necessary - not sure, but I want to take preventive measures against rust (paint out of the box was definitely lower quality, but at this price, I didn’t mind doing a little work and was prepared thanks to other reviews). Yes, I recommend. Take your time, don’t rush, and with a little work, you’ll have a rack well worth the time and starting price.

Overall An excellent rack for a cheap price, but for those wanting ease of use, are likely to be mounting and un-mounting it a lot, or need something that can take a beating, you'll want to look at more expensive options. Pros: - Great Price. At $70-90 ( including any shipping, tax, etc. ) this is a VERY good rack for it's price range. Keep that in mind when considering the Cons. Taken care of, it should get you several years of use at minimum. - Easy assembly. This rack goes together in about 15 minutes. It actually takes as long to mount it as it took to assemble. - Lightweight. I'm a 6' 200 pound guy. I was able to lift this rack onto the roof of my SUV virtually one-handed. It weighs much less than the box would indicate, and it's greatest obstacle is bulk. - Low road noise and fuel economy loss. For a roof rack, this is a major consideration. This one is fairly low profile and the fairing on the front does great at minimizing it's impact on your vehicle at 70MPH. Mine has an almost non-existent impact on highway mileage when empty. - Manufacturer appears to be listening. Earlier customers of this have rust issues in reviews. The manufacturer's response to that seems to have been to include a set of rubber tube gaskets to cover the joints on the rack. This means that you can get replacement and upgrade parts, which is a very useful thing. - Truly universal. The mounting brackets on this are big enough that I doubt you can find a roof rack spar too big for it to fit. The brackets also allow a lot of play, meaning you have some wiggle room if it doesn't quite fit the spacing of your roof spars. - Works well with aftermarket cargo nets and other items. The bars on this are small and well-spaced enough that they take net hooks and other attachments fairly easily. I actually ended up having to mount both a kayak and single-person canoe on top of this when the carry-vehicle for them broke down, and it was surprisingly easy to get them to not only fit, but strap in quite snugly to where they weren't moving in the slipstream with just a few rachet straps. Cons: - This is a budget rack. Don not expect Yakima/Rhino Rack/Etc. brand-name quality. It'll work, but it's not as nice as the name brands. - The rack is built imprecisely. The distance between bars on the basket varies enough that you may have the mounting blocks be very difficult to attach, or fall right off depending on where you put them on the rack. - Welds are mediocre. For most, this won't make a big deal. But for those expecting to really use and abuse this rack, you may want a better-built one. A number of welds on mine show melted out metal because the welder was set too high. - Powder-coating is terrible. On mine, this was already scuffing off when I got it out of the box. I ended up re-coating it with a high-quality spray paint, and that solved this issue. But it is a nuisance you'll have to bank on another $10-15 of paint for. - Mounting is a pain. The blocks that rest on your roof spars are hard plastic, and most likely won't match up exactly to your roof spars. Not a big deal, but it takes extra time to get the rack aligned on the roof for best results. The brackets that go around the spars are basically rubber-coated garage bolts like many people use for hanging tools. This means that you spend a lot of time climbing on your car to tighten them down by hand. Like I said before, almost as much as time as it takes to assemble it. - Rubber gaskets may or may not be effective. These were a little TOO easy to install. A good gasket needs a tight seal to keep out moisture. These slip over the screws with minimal effort, even without lubing them. They'll probably keep out some moisture, but it's not a guarantee.
