If someone broke into my house, would it be usable to defend myself?

If it haw a high enough carbon content yes and the steel is of good enough quality then yes. You want 1095 carbon steel I think. The last two numbers are the carbon content btw. 1095 would be 95 percent carbon content, 1060 would be 60 percent carbon content, and so on.

Wildsyde is wrong. It is not illegal to own swords in most cities.

Many states and cities have laws say you can't carry a knife or blade over a certain length on your person....some states have exemptions for when you are hunting.....but no state or city that I know of in the US makes it illegal to keep it in your house.

I am progun but I remember that I had a martial arts instructor that hated guns and he kept swords in his house sharpened and ready just in case his house was ever broken into...and he has been training his son and daughter for years in swordsmanship. They live with him.

If you are interested in learning to use swords for self defense Use Google maps to find a Kum Do, Kendo, Kenjutsu, or Iaido class near you...and attend as many classes a week as you can.

... also...and this is important, get a wooden sword or weighted plastic sword and after they teach you cuts, thrusts, blocks, and parries,...practice each one that you know on your own time every day. At least 50 repetitions per cut, thrust, and so on that you've learned every single day follow this with whatever sword forms that you've learned.

Try to maintain perfect form or as close to it as you can manage when practicing on your own thusly.

Also you should watch videos and learn to sharpen and maintain your sword. To clean and oil it and also to use aluminum and mag polish to polish it (although don't do that with Damascus swords).

As far as home defense you would probably want a one and a half foot long bowie knife or sting or something....because unless your house has a vaulted ceiling a full size katana, orchestra, or glamdring might get caught on the ceiling when you go to do a cut. Not to mention your sword might get caught on a wall in a hallway or something.

Go get a wooden sword or knife...or a stick that is about the same length of whatever knife or sword you plan on using for home defense...and practice different cuts thrusts and paries, if it hits the walls or bumps them then you should probably get something shorter.

I mean maybe keep different length blades for different areas of your home.

You could also reinforce a shield with level 3 AR500 plates and gorilla glue...and keep it ready in your room in case someone breaks in....just a thought.

Get some sharpening stones and Practice your sharpening on cheap crappy $5 straight razors or pocket knives or $1 kitchen knives from the dollar store for a few months and get good before you try sharpening a $200 or $300 katana though.  Don't want to ruin an expensive sword.

I have two questions: Does the guard have a blue highlight on it? Is it better or worse than the one sold by Warner Bros?

Will the blade be damaged if I choose to sharpen this?

Stainless Steel is hard, but that's the problem. It'll hold up until it doesn't, then it will shatter. Check out the Sword Buyer's Guide website if you want a real sword, not just a sword like object. There is a video on YouTube from. It is the home shopping network that a stainless katana shattered and slashed the host's face. Stainless blades over 24" are brittle. Think peanut brittle, hard but shatters. You want something strong and flexible, that will return to its original shape after being flexed. Think safety, that's the purpose of my whole answer. Now make it out of 1060 or 1095 carbon steel and I'm sold

could I take it out of the wall holder

Yes. It's a beautiful sword and you can easily take it down from the wall holder then put it back up. The wall holder gets mounted up.
