Would these be appropriate for ankle booties? Thick enough to prevent abrasions but not too thick as to make boots tight?

These should be fine as long as the bootie isn’t too high. They are a very nice weight, not overly thick , and very comfortable. They don’t bunch up or disappear into my shoe like some socks do. Hope this helps.

What are these socks made of?

Shrinks, so I suspect primarily cotton, but I purchased them months ago, so I cannot say for sure. My best girlfriend is a size 9 shoe, I am a size 6.5. She won't throw her socks in the dryer. I do, but I have a pretty small foot. I will say that they are extremely comfortable! We both have placed 2 orders, and referred them to friends. I just wish they would make them in plain black so I didn't have to spend so much time matching them up out of the dryer! I hope they see this!

Any loose threads inside the sock?

No loose threads. Also, no seam to push painfully on the toes. Love them.
