Greenwitch: The Dark is Rising sequence eBook : Cooper, Susan: desertcart.co.uk: Kindle Store Review: Amazing book in a series of amazing books - I came upon 'The Dark is Rising' collection quite by accident as I'd bought a collection of books for my Kindle and these books were part of the collection. They're a bit like the Harry Potter books or the Phillip Pullman trilogy in that they transcend children's literature and are equally suitable (and spell-binding)for adults. Susan Cooper writes from a well-informed perspective and you really feel that she's gone right inside the heads of the children involved. I loved that element of danger and risk and the unexpected was usually very unexpected but beautifully planned. A great read, believable characters, many nail-biting moments and good solid happy endings. What more could you ask for? Review: Forgotten how enjoyable these are... - ... and how nice it is to read about children/young folk enjoying themselves without any recourse to smartphones, consoles, computers or any other electronics. Actually, that's what I noticed most on this re-reading of Susan Cooper's series: the anthropocentric nature of so much recent fiction. Hers is still full of the wonder, mystery and cruelty of Nature. It makes a very refreshing change from reading about the wonder, mystery and cruelty of human beings. Of course that features, too, but when Nature plays such a significant role, there's a kind of perspective it's very easy to lose in a culture that's positively obsessed with hip, trendy, digital urban lifestyles. I'm looking forward to re-reading the rest of the series!

my own favourite of the series.
woven deeply into the keltic environment of fictional cornwall and hinting at folklore traditions that may even be partially true. unashamedly a young adult book with darker themes carrying forward and expanding into the other books. good stuff

I loved this one - perhaps more than books 1 and 2; as a very senior citizen I was out of the target pop. for this series when it first came out, and completely missed it, but am enjoying it greatly now! I found it well-written and would recommend it for young and older readers alike. Written before the 'benefits' of instant information and social media it was particularly enjoyable to see the plot develop, borrowing as it does from Arthurial and Celtic legends.

An Amazing Series
To my mind The Dark is Rising series is one of the best things ever written: I discovered them over 30 years ago and have been re-reading them every couple of years since. The characters are entirely believable and the plots move along at a spanking pace. I am always enthralled by Cooper's range and imagination. It is a wonderful set of books for literate young teens and adults alike and I heartily recommend it for all lovers of mythic fiction.

exiting
I read this book and found it exiting and different from the books I usually read but I probably won't read any more of the series as it was meant mainly for children.

Enjoyable continuation
This book is most enjoyable if you have read the two previous ones but I don't feel thus is essential. I love how the story weaves in old English folklore and ritual. Worth a read for adults as well as younger readers

So, it’s an amazing story with fantasy, magic and fun. Light against Dark, a good series of books that I enjoyed many years ago and have decided to read again. I try to read a chapter or two before drifting off. Fun read.

A fun continuation of “The Dark is Rising”. series. It brings together the characters from the first two books.

I have tried getting all five of the books in "The Dark is Rising Sequence" by Susan Cooper. They were issued on tape some time ago, and again on CD, but do not seem to be currently available except as library remainders or used copies from third parties. I am sad to say this one was remaindered from a public library in Texas, even though it is good quality and easy to use. I know our local library gave away all its children's tapes as CDs are the norm, but tapes are still easy to use and if they are for books no longer out on CD, then why not keep them? In any case, this is one of the shorter stories in this sequence which elaborates on English and Welsh myths including the Pendragon/Arthur/Merlin series, and customs of the past that still exist and are intertwined in an ancient and continued conflict of the Dark and the Light, good and evil, and human destiny in the hands of young people helped by several 'old ones' who are very old indeed. I only gave it four stars because it is on tape and not CD, so I listen to it at home while I really enjoy having these stories to listen to in the car. Cars should have tape and CD players for those of us with large collections of tapes.
