Rutland Creosote Remover, Fireplace, Wood Stove & Chimney Cleaner, 2 lb Tub

first off, not sure why amazon asked me to rate features, one of them being "easy to remove", lol. maybe they talking about removing the creosote.. I am not sure if this product is really working in the chimney, but I will assume it is because there is a science behind the chemicals used in these products that has already been proven to reduce creosote build up. So I am going to assume that it is working. The nice thing about this product is it is a good value, you can put a little on a fire one or two times a week assuring to keep applying the chemical to the chimney. Where as a creosote log that is expensive requires you to put the whole treatment up the chimney in one fail swoop. I kinda like the concept of adding a little bit as you go. The only thing I noticed that concerns me is, since I can't put the plastic scoop over the fire to dump it, I put it on my ash shovel and dump it over the fire that way... It seems to have stuck to and stained my ash shovel, I am guessing some part of the chemical have melted and adhere to the shovel. I guess that is how it works in the chimney it adheres itself in a thin layer and prevents creosote build up via some sort of catalytic reaction. Again I have not gone up the chimney and inspected or done any scientific study of this product, but I like the fact I can just apply a little one or two times a week depending on how much wood I burn.. Especially if I over dampen and the stove smolder for a long time, I like to get it reheated and then apply a little of this stuff to make sure to clean out the tar and creosote I caused by over dampening the fire. With the big log, you put it all in at once and then you are stuck if you accidentally run an over smoldered fire unless you want to burn a whole new expensive log. So being able to apply just a little is a great idea I like it. I guess one could cut the creosote log up into smaller pieces, but why when you can just grab a scoop of this product and apply to hot coals and a fire. By the way mine arrived powdered and not hardened up like a brick, I read a lot of people saying it was hardened up. I am guessing they product must have some how gotten wet/damp before they got it. I have had mine for quite a while now and it is still scoopable, although I have noticed a few chunks sticking together, but noting like the big hard brick others are talking about. I guess time will tell. Over All, I love this product and at a minimum it give me peace of mind.

This does work, but when the soot liquifies, it will run back down the flue, and any joint or angle can leak. If you have angles in your flue from an offset stove, watch for drips that will make a mess. (Glass cleaner works great to clean that up). Since I have a wood stove and 6" flue, I use half of the recommended amount and only half the time interval. My flue stays clear, but the crusted residue can fall off the inside to block the airflow.

I've used this product for several years; but never liked the aspect of putting the chemical on a low wood coal fire with damper wide open (hate wasting that precious heat and leaving damper open with fire later going out). Also I rarely let the fire burn down that low during heating season when this product is needed most. While I still do regular flue cleanings with a brush it just didn't seem like I was getting a lot of benefit. This season I decided to try putting the scoop of remover on my prepared assembly of wood before I started the fire. I leave the damper fully open in this situation until the magic heat unit turns on signalling the fire has got rolling. With this approach I find the magic heat scraper cleans the tubes much better than before and I don't have to do the cardboard/paper burn-outs as often. The top of the flue is, as always, where most of my cresote collects other than the magic heat unit. So no big change there. This approach lets the fire go out overnight so I can get it rolling again next time it's needed without leaving damper open thru the night. Now I'm fairly happy with the creosote remover and will continue buying for each heating season.

When used the right way, this stuff works very well and kept my chimney clean for the season without using it. I have to clean once a month for about four months or so but by using this, I only cleaned my chimney once during the season.

I almost never leave reviews (and when I do it's because I'm angry) but this is an exception. I had a woodstove chimney fire many years ago and decided to start using this after the last time the chimney was cleaned about 5 years ago. I read every web page that said anything about using creosote remover and the vast majority said it's a scam. I tried it anyway. Then I neglected to get it cleaned for at least 5 years while using it. I just had it and my fireplace chimneys cleaned before the heating season. The fireplace chimney was disgusting, the guy showed me the big pile of soot that fell out. I have never used it up there because we maybe have 30 fires a year in it. I asked about the woodstove fearing the worst but he said it was spotless. I burn it every day I'm home (I work at home) and it's under 55 outside, so about 90-100 fires a year. I use it more often than recommended just in case. It's worth the extra $10 for the peace of mind.

Bought a chimney cleaning kit and used this as well. It worked great. Removed lots of creosote. Fireplace draws much better. No more smoke rolling back into the living room. I had no concerns about using it. Just dump a little cup of it (cup Included) onto hot coals, close the door of your firebox, wait. It’s that easy.

So, new house, new chimney. I burn about 3 cords of wood a winter. Second winter starting. I do anything I can to try to prevent a chimney fire and to have several ways to put one out the best one can on hand. I live out in the country. If your house catches on fire, it's gone. With all that said, I went ahead and had my chimney swept as a precaution. I also use this stuff religiously. I go up and beyond the instructions. I use it every fire I build. So, almost daily. I also use double of what it says. I went through 3 tubs of this last year. My chimney sweeper said that this stuff or a sweep log really doesn't work. I would hope it does and will continue to use it just in case, but I can not find any proof online. I don't want to see a video from the company who makes it. I want to see an independent review.

I have used this product for 30 years, it works. Turns creasote into powder. Easier to clean the chimney. Unfortunately I received a cracked container. The powder was all over the inside of the box, all over everything else that was in the box. The box was not damaged, it was put in the box cracked. This is a toxic chemical, label says avoid contact with skin and eyes. If it comes in contact with skin flush with water for 15 minutes and contact a physician. Next time I will get it from local hardware store so I can inspect the container before I buy it.

Easy to use and def helped open fire . But sad can't recover it think the whole uk delivery damaged by Bresit !

A heads up that you should close your windows before burning and ensure your seal is tight on the woodstove door. It did bother my lungs a bit. But it definitely made a noticeable difference and will no be part of our bi-annual chimney cleaning routine.
