*** Disregard the Negative Reviews - Installed Properly This Is Amazing!!!
I've been trying to understand all the negative reviews of this item. I don't quite understand it and I have to put it down to people not understanding how to install it properly. This is a sturdy metal gate with two extensions, one for either side. I have a 43.5" opening to my back hallway. I needed an extra wide gate so i picked one up at a local store. It was very high and was very, very hard to step over. I decided I needed one with a gate for walking through. I found this one here on Amazon but balked when reading some of the reviews about it being "a plastic piece of junk", "unsteady and easily pushed over", etc. I decided to give it the benefit of the doubt since I'm on prime and could receive it quickly and make my own judgement. I figured I'd return either the one I bought locally or this one depending on how it went. Installation: For my opening (again 43.5") I needed one of the extenders. They are two different sizes and I used the bigger of the two. Maybe some of the people who had stability issues with the gate used the wrong size extender? IDK... So the gate has these threaded rods you spin to close the gap between the extender and the wall. They are really easy to adjust because they have adjustment knobs built right in. NOTE*** - People mentioning that the gate and latch don't line up may have not realized that they do have a gap but once it is tightened in place, that gap closes up. So looking at the gate out of the box you could say it doesn't line up properly but once tightened up and in place it's lined up perfectly. Within 5 minutes I had this thing tightened up and installed just fine. The swinging gate works like a champ and the locking mechanism is easy to use. I did read about people having problems with the latch but you basically just pull back the latch release on top and lift the gate up to open. You have to lift it because it has a piece that goes over the bottom rail to keep the gate steady on the bottom end. One thing I didn't do is screw the wall receivers into the wall. It comes with screws to do this but I wanted to check out the functionality before screwing them in. To anyone saying that a child or anyone else could knock this over, obviously didn't screw the wall receivers into a solid wooden part of the wall. If they had, you'd have to bend the entire gate to get it out of those and "knock it over". So.... Sorry for the long review but I hate seeing products get slammed for peoples failings in installation. I seriously wanted to pass on this item but I'm very glad I didn't. Worth the price and I won't be face planting in the middle of the night headed to the bathroom anymore.

Much better than some other gates and nice for the price
Let me start off by saying this is THIRD gate we've purchased to keep our 1 year old out of the cat food and water. The first one we bought was the old fashioned wooden Evenflo gate with the fold down tension bar.. those things are terrible now compared to the way they used to be designed. The second one we bought was the smaller version of the Regalo baby swing gate. The gate was acceptable but far from great. I'm so glad we changed our minds about that one and ordered this instead. Assembling and installing this one, the differences make so much more sense. I'm not sure if this is an old design and the quality of their newer gates has gone downhill, or if they've listened to feedback from customers and this gate is a new and improved design. Either way, this version is worlds better. The handle/locking mechanism is easy to use and very manageable using it one-handed (the other Regalo gate is so awkward and difficult, I didn't even lock it all the way because opening it was a headache). I also love that this version of the gate will swing open in either direction (other version only opened one way). This gate can also be fully disassembled if you need to take it apart (the other version had a pin that held the door on that "could not be removed by hand" after inserting it, according to the manual). This gate is sturdy and nice and will definitely serve it's purpose well. I'm not going to use the cups for this gate since I don't want to put more holes in the walls than necessary and it seems to be sturdy enough with just the tension. I will say that people should be aware of their measurements and the measurements of this gate and it's extensions. The main piece itself is about 29" without any extensions and then you have the option of using a 4" and/or 12" extension in addition to the 29" main piece. So it may be awkward for certain size openings. Also, a lot of people complained that the gate appeared bent and wouldn't latch.. but that is before installation. After the gate is installed and the tension is tightened, the bars come together and will latch correctly. That's mentioned in several places.

A good product, works great for dogs
We recently got a new cat, so I bought this gate to safely keep the dog from getting into the main room while they settled in/got used to one another. Anything advertised for "dogs" or "pets" usually gets a few extra bucks tacked on for the price, so I chose this as a cheap and reliable-looking option. It works great. The bars are small enough to keep our small, 11-ish lb dog from fitting through them. The cat can, with some effort (and some noise), squeeze his fat 15lb butt through if he wants to. I was especially pleased with the ease of the actual mounting of the gate; the pressure-based twist knobs/extensions work fantastically and keep the gate supported and secure. The upper latch is a little weird, but it works. It's not one of those jointed lever-raise-and-snap down ones. It's a pull-against-the-gate spring. The bottom latch pushes down onto the bottom steel line. It's different from what I'm used to but it works! Their extension system is also nice and seamless. Assembly was simple. Note, though, that the screws they provide to assemble work great once they're in, but their heads are weak and will strip easily on the way to try to get it back out. We screwed ours in comfortably tightly and happened to need to remove it, and we ended up having to send back the product because the head completely stripped when trying to loosen it again with a Phillips. This is a minor complaint, but just one to keep in mind for others! Overall, I would recommend it.

Quick Easy Fix For Puppies on the Rampage!
I just received the gate this morning (Thank you Amazon Prime two day shipping!) and had it set up in less than 10 minutes and that was including reading through the instructions!! I purchased this gate to keep my 2 puppies from going upstairs and destroying our brand new carpet. My requirements were 1) gate with a door, 2) Door easily opened and closed by school aged children, 3) Close enough slats to keep small dogs from squeezing through, and 4) A gate that would fit in the odd width of the stairwell entrance. I found all of this and much more with this gate! I have only had it up for about 30 minutes, but so far it is working just as I had hoped! The gate comes packed well. The pieces are zip tied together to keep them from bumping around during shipment and there is minimal use of Styrofoam (another something I like to keep the puppies away from!). There are three main pieces to this gate, 4 mounting pressure screws and 4 cups that can be mounted to the wall to keep the pressure screws in the exact location you want them. It says that you must use these if you install at the top of the stairs, and I can see why, but since I was mounting at the bottom of the stairs and only using to keep the puppies at bay, I did not install these. The large center piece has the gate in it and then there are two gate additions that can be mounted on either side to extend the gate. You simply remove the protective caps from the addition pieces, slide them on to the main gate and slide the pressure mounting screws into the 4 corners...then adjust the screws to the right pressure. That's it! The fit is perfect and tight in my stairwell! I did notice that the door looked a little crooked at first, but I had installed the four corners slightly uneven, so a slight wiggle to get the gate in square with the opening and wahlah! My kids have tested the door repeatedly and it is in perfect working order ;-) As for use with small children, I believe this gate would work perfect at the bottom of stairs or in between rooms. I am not a huge fan of gates at the top of the stairs that are not completely mounted into the wall because children tend to lean and climb and fall into these things easily, but as far as construction goes, this is a great gate!

A decent gate, but there are better gates available.
This rating is based on a comparison with the Munchkin Easy Close gate which as of now is the 5 star standard in my opinion. The Regalo easy open gate has features that make it very easy and quick to install but the Munchkin gate is much more convenient in its daily use. Finish: (Munchkin) Both gates are made of steel. The finish on the Regalo seems pretty easy to scratch. The latch actually has started wearing away the finish where they meet and I haven't had the gate up long. The finish on the Munchkin isn't indestructible but it is a little bit thicker. Extensions: (Regalo) Both gates have adjustable widths with various extensions available. Neither company uses a system in which the extensions interlock to hold together. One slides into the other and they're held together when the gate is squeezed between the wall. This isn't an issue with use. It's just a small inconvenience when installing and parts keep falling out of place. Munchkin's extensions connect via plastic brackets whereas Regalo's connect by sliding metal poles into each other. This is better when tightening the gate as you can see some strain on the plastic with the munchkin. Regalo could learn from Munchkin's advertising as the user manual for Munchkin has their various extensions listed in their book making the parts easier to look up. Wall Connection: (Regalo for ease/Munckin for safety) Both gates have 4 feet that extend out to secure the gate between the wall. Each has cups that can be attached to the wall via screws then the feet sit in them without moving. This is impractical because that's 4 holes most people aren't going to want to put in their wall. The rubber wall protectors available from other companies work great to hold these gates in place. However, Regalo does already have rubber coating their feet while Munchkin doesn't. I still wanted the extra contact surface area between the feet and wall so I used wall protectors with the Regalo anyway. Each company uses different methods to tighten the gate into place. Regalo doesn't need tools and Munchkin needs includes wrenches. My worry with the Regalo is that the easy tighten nature of the nuts will also make them easy to loosen by curious hands over time. It is insanely easy to install when compared to the Munchkin gate though. Lock: (Munchkin)The opening/latch mechanism on the Regalo is a plastic handle that you move but the actual lock is a metal bar. The locking mechanism on the munchkin is all plastic but is much sturdier than their older designs. To open the regalo you pull back on the latch with your thumb and lift the door before swinging open. The munchkin you can just squeeze the handle (there's a top and bottom button on the handle that need squeezed simultaneously) and open the gate without lifting. The munchkin gate has a locking feature on the bottom that, when closed, allows the gate to lock shut without any extra effort. Other features: (Munchkin) One of the biggest reasons I like the Munchkin gate over the Regalo is that the size of the opening is very small with the Regalo. I don't have the measurements but it's noticeable. When used on stairs, the smaller opening may make normal traffic or carrying things up and down a nuisance. The munchkin gate also has a plastic device atthe bottom of the gate that allows you to control which way the gate swings if you care to. With the lift to open design of the Regalo this isn't a feasible feature. Price point: The Regalo was about $38 when we bought it and the Munchkin about $45.

Great to use on stairs
We recently got a puppy that turned out to be blind, so we had to start puppy proofing the house. When she was just a tiny pup, we were keeping her mainly in our kitchen to keep her from having accidents on the carpet elsewhere in the house. We have a wide opening into our kitchen, and this gate worked perfectly to block off that opening. Installation was easy. The directions are clear and concise. If you are using it with the screw in cups to make the gate sturdier, I would recommend using a larger screw than the ones provided. We used it without the cups, and it holds up fine even when the dog bangs against it. We like the one that we used in the kitchen so much that when the puppy got older, we decided to get one to put at the top of the steps on our deck to keep her safe from tumbling down the steps. You would think that a blind dog would be cautious, but nope. Not this dog. To make sure that she was completely safe, we used to cups to help keep the gate extra secure. The gate is super sturdy. I've rattled it, shook it, banged on it, etc. and it doesn't budge in the slightest. The swinging part of the gate opens and closes easily, which is so much better than the old baby gates that you had to take down and put back every time you wanted to go through them. The gate also has a metal tab to hold it in place at the bottom, and the latch at the top of the gate is easy to open and close. One thing to note - you have to make sure that you extend the spindle rods ate the top to the right length to let the latch close properly. If you put too much pressure, the latch will not be able to open. If you put too little, it will not latch properly. However, this is easy to adjust. I highly recommend this product to anyone needing a really sturdy gate.

Serves its purpose, but needs longer connectors
First off, this gate serves its purpose by stopping my toddler from being able to climb the stairs. That's about where the good stops. When I tried to purchase this gate, I put in a quantity of two, and the quantity was automatically updated to one. Upon further inspection, it stated that a limit was placed on the item of one per customer. I looked at the product page, and no where did it list that there were any limitations on the product. My wife tried to order another gate, and the order went through. After about an hour, she received an email stating that her order was cancelled and she was in violation of Amazon's policy on limited items. We looked again, but could see no limitation policy, and nothing on the product's page stating that quantity was limited. I think a limitation of one gate is ridiculous as I imagine many parents are in the same position as me and have more than one location to block off, and they would like the gates to match. For instance, we are trying to block off the top and bottom of the stairs. Our highest priority was to block the top of the stairs -- for obvious reasons -- so we installed this gate there. Our stairway must be an odd length because it's not wide enough to use both extensions, but so small that the braces are almost all the way extended. This isn't a limitation of the product, just an unfortunate size difference between what the gate fits and our stairwell. However, the connector for where the extensions connect to the main gate are very short. They are so short that when my nine-month-old stands up and pulls on the gate, it causes the gate to bow. We were afraid that she would be able to pull the gate enough to dislodge the pressure mount, so we ordered another gate. The new gate -- a Summer brand -- and it has much better performance. It fits our stair well, is more secure, and has connectors that are about three times as long as the ones included with the Regalo gate, so it's much more secure; also, the gate has a wider opening. The width of the gate opening for the Regalo gate is very narrow. I'm not sure what the width is, but I'm 5'11" and I hit my hip on the gate every time I step through it. We moved the gate to the bottom of the stairs and installed the Summer gate at the top of the stairs since it was more secure. We are much more comfortable having it at the bottom of the stairs since its purpose there is to prevent her from climbing the stairs. Overall, the price on this gate is excellent, but the negative features far outweigh any convenience in the low price. I wish I would have saved my money on this gate and bought two Summer gates from the start. Pros: -Price Cons: -Doesn't seem to be very secure -Opening Width is small -Policy limiting to one gate

Super!
Ganz toll!

Perfect for wide doorways or passages
Worked very well for us. When I opened the carton it seemed like the pieces would not possibly align, but once you fit it against the wall, the tension holds everything in place. I did not need to drill holes or fit anything in the wall. My twins bang and shake the heck out of it, and it rattles, but nothing happens. Perfect!
