I use this instead of the crummy sponge provided with most soldering irons. You can also dip the iron to get flux and keeps the tip clean. It's fun to use. Worth the investment.

Absolutely amazing. Don’t worry about the rosin at the bottom being hard/cracked. It’s fine. Your soldering iron tip gets black, junky, and oxidized. This makes it difficult for your iron to transfer heat and hold solder. With this product, you dip your iron in right to the bottom through the brass mesh. It will melt some of the rosin and as you pull it out, the brass wool gently removes any buildup that’s present. Do that a couple times quickly and then a couple time just into the brass makes the tip perfectly shiny and ready to go. Touch it with solder and it covers the whole tip. Heat transfer is restored. Poking through to the hard rosin will also help secure the brass in the container. I’ve tried other methods and nothing comes close to this. I’ll never use a damp sponge again, it just doesn’t work like this. Also, don’t even need tip tinner. This is all you need to maintain and clean your soldering tip. When you’re done, clean it with a couple deep then shallow dips and then coat it with some new solder. Unplug so it cools with a protective layer to help prevent oxidization. When you use it again, just clean it off again before you start. Amazing! Makes soldering so much easier with a clean tip that transfers heat well.
