Very educational
This book was so helpful on my trip to Mexico City. I visited several areas based around the area of stay. Very helpful indeed!

excellent coverage of mexico
this guide to the entire country of Mexico is perfect for travelers. although the descriptions of each major city a tourist would likely visit is a bit spare, it does highlight the major sights, eats, hotels and shopping experiences. it also includes very helpful info on pronunciations, tipping, cultural no-nos and other very useful, basic necessities of getting by while traveling through mountain, jungle, coastal and mountainous terrain. cultural norms are different, foods will change, and climate will change dramatically. knowing the information given in "Mexico" will enhance your trip enormously. read it. twice. take it with you. you'll be more confident of yourself as an expat in mexico.

Wish they had more info about where to stay as a base.
4.5 stars because I LOVED all the information they gave on the history and the people of the region. After reading their "Understanding Mexico" section, I felt like I got an intimate glimpse into the depth of the experiences of the people and their culture. I've tried MANY different travel guides and NEVER have I gained this level of understanding about the people. It's done SO well that I want to go back and buy a Lonely Plant guide for all the countries I've ALREADY traveled to. I even want to buy one for the USA (which is the country I'm from and currently reside). The only reason I didn't give this guidebook a 5-star is because even though I thought the information was good, I wish they would talk more about where to stay as a base for day trips around each region. I loved the amount of information they gave for each site and its history. I just wish it had more information on how to get to each site from popular locations, like teaching you how to navigate the local buses to get to the famous Pyramid of the Sun from Mexico City, or the different options you could take to get to Tamal Waterfall from Ciudad Valles, and what to expect. That would have definitely been more helpful, and other travel guides are a lot better with these kinds of things. I think Lonely Planet's strong suit is mainly going into detail about the culture and the history of the people. It explains the politics and why people are the way they are, which can arguably be the most important factor in understanding the country you're traveling to/in.

Good overall base for travel planning
I primarily bought the book because my search for information on the Oaxacan coast has been minimal. I felt the information is easy to use & gives a good overall feel of the area. I’ve loved Lonely Planet books in the past and this one is terrific too.

LP always meets my travel research needs/Akumal??
I use lonely planet for all my travels. It's always right on point for the kind of traveler I am. The Mexico LP meets my travel research needs. We are considering going to Akumal. There is no mention of this area. Does anyone know why?

Hard to think of being without a Lonely Planet for whatever country I am in
So far, this one seems useful for Mexico where I spend a lot of time. Obviously, things change so all may not be accurate but that is true for any guidebook. Always, the LP is my favorite series.

Comprehensive, well written guide
Very useful on our trip to Mexico City. The restaurant attraction views were spot on, and they added in a lot of good historical and cultural background.

Wouldn't travel to Mexico without this book
The book is essential if you want to travel around Mexico because it tells you what to look for in new places that you might not otherwise think of as well as other useful information. Using this book, visiting the local tourist office and having a computer for internet access and you should be good to go.
