Review: Great compact earmuffs - I have been using this ear muff for several months now and they are great. The only concern I had at the time was with the low NRR rating, but since I have a way around it for my purposes, it wasn't a deal breaker. And besides, the price was so affordable that I wouldn't be out much money if it didn't work out. For my purposes, I use this ear muff whenever I go out to the range (indoor and outdoor). To get around the low NRR I use double hearing protection which means I use a disposable ear plug with the ear muff over it. I can still hear the range master since they use a PA system all the while I'm avoiding serious hearing damage (from both the PA system and the gun sounds). But the main reason why I bought this style ear muff (other than it was from Howard Leight) was that at the time my older one was just too bulky. It was great at blocking noise, but it made it such that I couldn't get a low cheek weld on my rifle's butt stock. This meant having to raise the sights needlessly. As a rule of thumb, you want your scope as low and close to the barrel as possible. Since this ear muff is about half the thickness of my older one, it allowed me get a low cheek weld and also allowed me to put the scope much closer to the barrel. In addition this ear muff is really light weight, looks good, and not as tight as I expected it to be. You do want to be a little careful when extending/retracting the ear muffs from the head band since the steel frame used to connect the muffs to the headband is thin. I always feel like I might inadvertently bend or break it. Also, I bought a pair of Radians Clay Pro Shooting Glasses which has a really thin wireframe. This helps in eliminating any tightness around the ears for those of you who find wearing this ear muff with your existing shooting glass uncomfortable. Now there's one cautionary note. If you are going to be in close proximity to large caliber gunfire (especially indoors) or around sound that is about or over 160 decibels, this ear muff may not be sufficient for you unless you use ear plugs along with this. Other than that, this is a great buy.
Review: Good Earmuffs Make All The Difference - I bought these Howard Leight LOF earmuffs after using a cheap pair of another brand for many years. Makes all the difference in the world! These earmuffs are well made and lightweight. They fit my head gently and well. The old ear muffs squeezed my head and ears. Gave me a light headache. No one in my family wanted to wear them. The slim profile of these LOF earmuffs help them to be lightweight and compact and interfere less with the stock when shooting a rifle. If you wear them during outdoor shooting, the lower noise reduction of the earmuffs is fine. However, I recommend using ear plugs with the earmuffs if you are shooting at an indoor range. I bought a pair of Howard Leight L3 earmuffs for use at an indoor range because they have a higher noise reduction rating. They are equally comfortable and tame the harsh noise at an indoor range. The price of the earmuffs is great and desertcart Prime free shipping makes it a great value. I wish I had bought these LOF earmuffs a long time ago... I'll be buying another pair or two in the near future.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: how many decibles do these reduce?**
A: It was a little difficult to tell what the accurate answer is to this question. I had the same one before I bought and tried to find out myself. The best I can tell, the noise reduction level is about 20 dB. It seems to be most effective for sound levels above 82 dB, either as continuous volume or impulse. That compares to 15 to 30 dB for well-fitted, deeply-inserted foam ear plugs, 15 to 40 dB for high quality, well-fitted, non-electronic ear muffs and 25 to 50 dB for wearing both ear plugs and non-electronic ear muffs. It appears that these muffs are adequate for the casual and occasional shooter. Noise damage is both cumulative and time sensitive, however, so if you are a serious shooter and have extended or frequent exposure to weapon noises or other noises for hours at a time and several times per week, you should consider the electronic muffs. Most Peltor muffs of the non-electronic variety provide 21 to 30 dB of noise reduction and it appears that most authorities agree that 20 to 30 dB is "effective" noise reducton. The Howard Leight 01523 set is, therefore, in the "effective" range but at the lower end. That's why you will find a frequent descriptions of these earmuffs as "good for the money." They aren't the best, but they aren't bad at this price. I'm sure you have found as I did that you can spend $50 to $100 and get no better protection with non-electronic muffs and if you want more noise reduction, you can get it for $100 to $500 or more. I have even seen ear plugs that can be custom made for over $1,000. You pay your money and you take your choice. I have used my 01523 model several times and I am satisfied and have no ringing in my ears after an hour of shooting with a Sig 9 mm and an AR 15 and a S&W .380. By the end of the hour, the muffs feel a bit heavy, my protective glasses frames are pressing hard enough into my scalp behind my ears to be uncomfortable and my ear muff pads are moist with perspiration, even in an air-conditioned range. I'm glad to take them off when I'm finished but I'm glad I wore tham, too, because I can still hear perfectly normally. One of these days, I may choose to spend $200 and get an electronic set of muffs with 40cB of protection but I may not get any more comfort or utility from those than I get from the ones I have.

**Q: Has anyone used these in public places like malls/stores (rather than the shooting range)? I have trouble with sensory overload in crowded places. Thx**
A: YES!! I use these for that EXACT purpose, among many others. I too have difficulty with not only sensory overload but also social anxiety in crowded places (even not so crowded places), and honestly I do not go to any public places without them. If you use them by themselves, they will cut noise substantially. But if you couple these with either NRR 33 earplugs (made by many different manufacturers) or small, audio earbuds, THAT is where the true solution lies. I pack my MP3 player with 'white noise' and relaxing music (mostly chill-out instrumentals); I put the earbuds in then I put these muffs over my ears. I use the exact same setup at the gym, on walks, at school while studying, while doing any kind of shopping, while at fast-food joints, etc. I am never without them. They are inconspicuous enough to pretty much where anywhere, they just look like some form of headphones. Portable peace, quiet and mental clarity WHEREVER you may go.

**Q: Has anyone used these to help with the sound of barking dogs? Will they block that type of sound?**
A: I sleep with these to block the sounds of my husband snoring and my dog walking around at night, and they've been a blessing. Folded up they're easy to store and take with me when I travel. They do not block out all noise; I doubt any "ear protection" will. But for their modest price and small profile, which makes it possible for me to sleep on my back in them, I'd say they're well worth trying.

**Q: Does anyone know if these earmuffs have replacement cushions?**
A: I don't know for sure, but if they did the replacement cushions would probably cost as much as a new pair of earmuffs. c.k.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Good Fit, Work Well With Plugs
*by T***G on September 10, 2012*

I bought these for my girlfriend to take to the shooting range becuase she is not a fan of the noise. She wore them along with a pair of in ear buds for added protection. She said they were OK but it's tough to go on that because she didn't like the sound initially anyways. I can say that I put them on without additionally ear plugs while a 9mm and .40cal were being fired and I have to be honest, I wouldn't wear only these to the range. It was a new indoor area so I wasn't really used to the acoustics in there a whole lot compared to my usual range so that may have played a part. Don't get me wrong, they definitely functioned in dampening the sound. They would absolutely work if you had nothing else, but from my brief encounter they wouldn't be the first ear protection I own that I would reach for. That being said, I am sure they work fine with additional ear plugs in. I must say they are very comfortable, sleek profile and everything. They fold up into a very nice neat package which is great. I am a bit nervous about breaking the small metal wire though when I adjust them, but it hasn't happened yet so whatever. All in all they are good so far and I won't be sending them back. Get them if you are considering it.
