Virtual team experiences seem to be either enjoyed or endured, but rarely ever neutral. In fact, some of the horror stories I've heard about virtual teams have left me shocked--and hesitant to be a part of a virtual team in the future. Yet, after reading Perfect Phrases for Virtual Teamwork, I'm eager for my next virtual team experience. With the practical tips and guidelines it offers, many of the typical headaches can be avoided. Now, whenever I hear another horror story, I see how it could have been avoided by following the suggestions Meryl gives. Putting a copy of this book in the hands of each team member can help to empower the success of not only the individuals on the team, but the team as a whole. It helps everyone to speak the same language and collaborate toward the same goals. Meryl also includes online Virtual Team Agreement and Planning Forms. These forms alone are worth the price of the book! [...] Perfect Phrases for Virtual Teamwork is a tool you don't want to be without. It's the book you want in your hands when you know there has to be a better way! Review: This is a great tool for today's business environment - Perfect Phrases for Virtual Teamwork (PPVT) is the fourth book in a series that many have come to love and depend on. I have personally come to really love books like this whose real value is in their practical application. The business book genre gets plenty of books based around good ideas, which I like too, but there is also a place for a manual such as this. Books like these require a permanent place on your desk to realize their full potential. It is with this in mind that I feel like PPVT really shines. The book is made up of some 16 chapters which comprise 3 main parts to the book. The table of contents is organized very cleanly and logically so that the book could be referenced at moment's notice during a real scenario. These three parts are Preparation, Launch and Teaming. The section that I have found the most immediate aid with comes on page 53 in Part II. In this section the author discusses the fact that many people have different working definitions of phrases such as vision, mission, goals or purpose and it can be helpful to align the team under a single definition early on. Two of the suggested phrases for this are: * Because there are so many different definitions of visions, goals, and objectives, I'm beginning this section of our launch with working definitions of each * A virtual team vision paints a picture that creates an image to strive toward My only real complaint with this book is that there are more than a few typos which I personally find to be annoying. Recommended.
