If you have a KitchenAid mixer, you're missing half the value is you aren't buying the attachments. After using a box grater to grate about 100 lbs. of cheese for Thanksgiving, I got this attachment. I've used it a few times and it has been a life saver. Mostly for homemade mac & cheese but also for hard cheeses. So that means some of the parts I've never used. Doesn't matter, its been worth the cost just for the parts I have used. Save your arms and knuckles and get this. You'll be glad you did.

The attachments are made out of plastic and are totally worthless!! I junked it in its box and ordered one made out of metal from another company. Big mistake. I went to use it today, year or three have passed and I got out the wrong box, set everything up for potatoes and carrots. Stuffed the potatoes in and it wouldn't do squat! What's the matter, oh, hell, I got the wrong box out! This box by mistake! This time I am going to make sure it is in the plastic recycle garbage bin. Why would any company make cutters out of plastic except to rob a byer. Madness! It doesn't deserve on star!!

BUT: it's not a big but, however, you have to watch it when grating softer cheeses like Old Cheddar and Gouda, because they tend to "jam up" in the grater. Not a huge deal; you just have to stop the procedure and ease the product out using some sort of plastic utensil before continuing. What I find works best is to place cheeses of this type in the freezer for about an hour before grating to "toughen" them up a bit. However, when thin slicing potatoes for Scalloped Potatoes or grating them for Potato Latkes or cabbage when making Cole Slaw, it works like a charm. Even though it is not a Kitchen-Aid product, it fits and operates beautifully. I highly recommend this attachment. Sept. 8: Now that I have owned this item for 9 months and have used it extensively, I have to say that it is one of my favorite "KITCHEN GADGETS". I have used it for all of the things I listed and it is terrific for grating cheeses: instead of buying grated cheeses in a package. It is not only economical to do so, but you end up with a better quality of grated cheese. Remember; there are Great Cheeses and there are Grated Cheeses (in a package), but there are no Great Grated Cheeses!

I was pleasantly surprised by the high quality of this attachment, it's really worth the price. So far I was only able to use it once for grating some carrots, and it did the an excellent job! Not a single piece of carrot was stuck in the attachment unlike in my old electric grater. Very happy with my purchase!
