How do you know which size to buy?

It depends on what you like. If you have a spread collar you want the medium or small size. If you have a normal collar you want the medium or large size. The larger size makes the collar stiffer.

Have they improved the durability and power of the magnets?

Yes, but they are still not strong enough. I use them without the magnets and they’re great collar stays.
